Let’s be real – this is Olivia Rodrigo’s year. The 18-year-old songstress has not released a single bad song, and she’s now (basically) on-par with Taylor Swift as the queen of heartbreak music. Following her love triangle dramz with Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter earlier this year, she released ‘drivers license,’ which was iconic. Now, Olivia’s preparing to release her debut album, Sour, and we’re beyond excited. Forget the release of the second season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS) – this is way more important.
What’s the album going to sound like?
During an interview with The Face Olivia said, “I suppose I’m considered a pop artist, but I’ve never felt like one. This album is full of stuff that I like, which is so diverse. There are elements of alternative rock in there, alt-pop, some country, and definitely a lot of folk. I think anyone can find something they like hidden in one of the songs.”
Some of her favourite artists include Taylor Swift, Lorde, Alanis Morissette, and Phoebe Bridgers – so we might see some inspiration from them!
What are the songs about?
I know we’re all still wondering if her next hits are going to be about Joshua Bassett or not. But Olivia revealed from her interview with The Face that she wrote this album when she was still 17 so she was at a “really strange age where you’re figuring out so many things: how you want to be treated, love and heartbreak, how you fit into the world, and how you relate to other people…[Sour] is me grappling with all of them. It wasn’t something I wrote in hindsight. It’s very much how I was feeling at that time. I needed to write those songs to process those emotions.”
Do we have any singles yet?
Luckily, we do. And they slap. Olivia released “good 4 u” only yesterday, and half the Internet has basically memorised every. single. lyric. This angry-angsty rock girl anthem needs to be added to your playlist like yesterday.
What does the rest of the album look like?
Although Olivia has not released any snippets of the songs beforehand, we’ve got a good look at the tracklist and it’s looking like the ultimate breakup album.
