Back in 2011, Prince Harry wore the uniform of the Blues and Royals, the calvary regiment of the British Army he joined in 2006. He also pinned his Army Air Corp wings above his Golden Jubilee and Afghanistan Campaign medals.

Now: Prince Harry

This time the groom, Prince Harry wore the frockcoat uniform of the Blues and Royals, an unexpected choice. Experts had predicted he would wear the regalia reflecting his new role as Captain General of the Royal Marines. Prince Philip once served as the ceremonial head, but his grandson took over following his retirement. The Queen gave her permission for this look though, Kensington Palace confirmed.

Then: Kate Middleton

Designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, the Duchess of Cambridge’s stunning wedding dress cost a rumoured Dhs1,231,500 to make. Victorian-inspired corsetry inspired the bodice, and Burton added subtle padding around the hips to create an hourglass shape. The bride paired the lace ballgown with the sparkling Cartier halo tiara.

Even though she was in the audience, the Duchess of the Cambridge still wore a cream-like yellow. She paired the wool silk tailored coat by Alexander McQueen with a Philip Treacy hat and Jimmy Choo shoes. This ensemble has appeared in public before; she previously wore it to Princess Charlotte’s christening and the Queen’s birthday party.

Then: Prince William

Prince William wore a red Colonel of the Irish Guards uniform made with special heat-absorbing material to keep cool in Westminster Abbey. The Queen reportedly preferred this regalia over what the groom could have worn as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. The blue sash indicates that he’s a member of the Order of the Garter.

The best man matched his brother by also wearing the frockcoat uniform of the Blues and Royals. Both ensembles were tailored at Dege & Skinner on Savile Row, but Prince William had some added bling on his. The gold braid — better known as an aiguillette — on his right side bears the Queen’s cypher, again signalling that he’s a member of the Order of the Garter.

Then: Queen Elizabeth II

The monarch looked like a ray of sunshine in a two-piece crepe wool ensemble by Angela Kelly, the official curator and designer of the Queen’s wardrobe. Kelly also created her hat, which featured handmade silk roses. Queen Mary’s True Lovers Knot diamond brooch finished off her look.

OK so she’s not quite royal, but in 2011 the bride’s sister stunned everyone in her form-fitting white Alexander McQueen gown. The maid of honour later revealed Sarah Burton chose the untraditional hue for a very specific purpose. “The plan was not really for it to be a significant dress,” she told TODAY, “really just to sort of blend in with the [wedding dress’s] train.”
