For the most part, I feel pretty comfortable as an adult. I love having a multi-hyphenate career; I love having fiscal autonomy to buy whatever I want (after you know, the bills are taken care of and stuff) and I love being able to do whatever I want without asking for permission. The fruits of all that childhood labor (read TEENAGE ANGST) are delicious.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned about adulthood, it’s that it’s about unlearning A LOT of what you were taught growing up. So, I’ve done several waves of masterful therapy, therapy can be the pinnacle of awkward self-consciousness.
Think about it – you spend an hour deep-diving into the archives of your life (a place that not even the nearest and dearest always have access to) for an hour, pay up, and then plod along with the day. Obviously, there is an arc to it all but the initiation is a tall order of what feels like oversharing.
So, when it comes to therapy, healing, feeling, I want the results YESTERDAY. Yep, I’m a tricky and picky candidate. So, when it comes to approaching something that is ‘new age’ I take it all with a truckload of salt. Practicality is my mentality.
I’m the kind of person who when I open a book, I want it ALL in the first few pages. I don’t do delayed gratification very well. If I’m not hooked in a matter of words, you’ve lost me. Thank you, NEXT.
OK, let me move from a book to a baking reference: I like to take the cake out of the oven before it’s done. But to unpack a lot of internal systems, a lifetime of introspection needs to be allotted.
There are so many ways to do therapy: talk therapy, dancing, reiki, yoga – the list is endless. Nir Levi is based on one of the oldest healing arts in the world. The art of Anma originated in China 5,000 years ago is based on the philosophy of Taoism, the model of “Yin and Yang” and the Chinese “5 elements theory”. To break it down further, it’s a combo of therapy, body reading, and energy transfer.
A key point to the Nir Levi Method is that our bodies remember what our conscious mind forgot. Basically, we are kinda all over the place – way to go 21st century…
As usual, I have questions – who is this best for? What are you supposed to feel?
Nir, the man himself, was sitting across from me in a room at SEVA, the space that I like to call Nepal meets Norway. He has over three decades of experience, with specialisms in both physical and emotional systems of healing arts.
In the full-body physical work part of this system, Nir uses different kinds of stimulation techniques on the Qi points, which are located on the meridian system of the body. Nir uses a large variety of exercises and stretches on all parts of the body. The main purpose of the work is to stimulate the Qi points, and release muscle tension, create energy movement in the meridian system of the body, create better blood circulation and Qi circulation, to improve the body’s ability to heal itself.
In my hour-long session, Nir moved up and down my body in staccato beats. It was like having a frantic massage without the franticness. I think I may have even had a few minutes of shut-eye.
He ended up at my feet, kneading some hella good press points. And then it felt like he lingered and just held my feet for several minutes. I heard him shuffling around me so I thought, he can’t be holding them. I look up and he’s in front of me – whatever he did at my feet, had a lasting effect and was pretty magnetic in all.
Nir Levi visits SEVA on a regular. The next time he is in town, we’ll let you know!
