Lately, we’ve been contemplating a switch up to our normal gym routine and have been considering taking up barre classes. We weren’t sure if this type of workout would give us the health benefits we’re looking for, so we chatted with Nora Hameidani, founder and creative director of Barre Effect studio to learn a lil’ more about this physical activity.

Before we get started on the health benefits, we needed to find out what exactly this exercise practice entails. “Barre exercise combines yoga, ballet, and pilates in low-impact movements that rely mainly on the body’s own resistance. Barre is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and can easily be adapted to work around injury or pregnancy. As a low-impact exercise it also means that the body is worked effectively, but needs less time to recover, allowing you to train more consistently.” Sounds pretty good to us.
As far as the advantages they give to the mind and body, we’re ngl they seem nothing short of ah-mazing. Here are six improvements we’ll see taking Barre classes 3 times a week.
Lifted Energy and Mood
Exercise is energising. Any kind of movement that makes you sweat and releases endorphins is a natural way to gain energy. The focus required in a barre class to master the technique can shift you into a meditative state. It helps you switch off from the day and have a mental re-set, lifting your mood and reducing stress. There is always high energy in the studio as each class is set to music. The class format offers an encouraging and friendly environment to leave you feeling positive and with a spring in your step.
Full-Body Muscle Tone and Increased Metabolism
Barre is form-orientated, and works specific muscles to the point of fatigue with a combination of strengthening, stretching, and cardio. The entire body is worked in multiple ways and muscles that may get neglected in traditional workouts are targeted. This helps build lean muscle which in turn revs up your metabolism. The classes put you into a calorie burning zone meaning you burn calories even after the class has finished.Â

Perfected Posture
Barre strengthens the entire body, including the deep muscles in the abdomen, pelvis, and back. These muscles attribute to your posture, and working them in a long, lengthening way will help to improve posture. Having these muscles strengthened can in turn decrease pressure on your spine, reducing the chance of back pain and injury.
Better Balance
Barre classes are set to music, forcing you to focus on the beat to stay in rhythm. The movements are often compound, using different muscles groups at once, which works on your coordination and mental focus. Many moves are done on one leg, which challenges your balance as well as strengthens your stabilising muscles. This increases bone density and helps in preventing injury.

Enhanced Muscular Endurance
Endurance training increases stamina, meaning you’ll be able to maintain a higher level of activity in your everyday life. Many moves will start to burn after just 30 seconds. In every class, both mental and physical endurance is challenged. Having a high level of muscular endurance also lowers the risk of developing health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
Finessing Flexibility
Maintaining flexibility can help you to feel more comfortable and relaxed at all times. Practicing flexibility training regularly can prevent stiffness from activites such as sitting or driving for long periods of time. It also prevents injury due to muscle tightness.Â
