The VMAs made headlines this summer as one of the first COVID-era award programs to stage a live, in-person ceremony. “Thanks to increased safety measures, the 2021 show is looking to center live entertainment once again, just as concerts return throughout the rest of the United States,” said MTV. This year’s VMAs are set for Sunday, Sept. 12.

Justin Bieber leads the pack with seven nominations, thanks to his video for “Peaches,” which he co-directed with Daniel Caesar and Giveon, as well as his starring appearance in DJ Khaled and Drake’s “POPSTAR,” which was nominated for Video of the Year. Megan Thee Stallion is right behind with six nominations, thanks in part to her collab with Cardi B on “WAP,” as well as an Artist of the Year nomination. Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon, and Lil Nas X are five-time nominees and Olivia Rodrigo – the “Drivers License” singer who is nominated for the first time. (Good 4 u, Olivia!)
