Netflix’s One Piece adaptation has shot straight into the streaming service’s Top 10, giving a live-action look at Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they attempt to find the one piece of treasure that would crown him the king of the pirates. But what was the budget spent on the adaptation, from the famous anime series?

Last week, a live-action version of Eiichiro Oda’s anime cartoon One Piece took over our timelines. It follows season one of the anime series of the same name, as well as adapting some of the East Blue manga saga. Production on the series began in January 2022, and finished in August 2022, before it was released a year later (after presumably a lot of post-production work) in August 2023.

Netflix’s One Piece budget spent per episode

But how much money was spent on the live action adaptation? Here’s what you need to know about budget speculation.

In a report from Netflixwoche (Netflix’s German website, as reported by GQ), the budget for One Piece allegedly sat at around $17.27 million (approximately £14.4 million) per episode. There are eight episodes in season one of One Piece, which puts the overall budget at around $138 million. Wow.

For comparison, reports say the budget for Game of Thrones was allegedly around $14.79 million (approximately) per episode, which is around £11.7 million per episode. Although it’s worth noting, it’s unclear whether that is season eight of Game Of Thrones, or an aggregate of each season.

While the One Piece budget is allegedly below the episode budget of established hit Stranger Things, with Wall Street Journal claiming the season four budget was around $30 million per episode.
