According to HBO Drama Chief Francesca Orsi’s interview with Deadline, the shooting of the next season of the hit HBO series, Euphoria, is expected to start a bit later due to two key reasons which means we’ll have to wait till 2025.

As we know from Zendaya‘s interviews (click on the embed to watch her explain), the show is usually edited and processed in real time as the episodes air. This is why this news is even more upsetting to hear because this means we will have to wait even longer than expected.

Let’s do the math: season 2 of the show also faced delays, and then Covid-19 hit, and eventually aired in January 2022 — which was basically three years after the show debuted in June 2019. So now with this news of the delay, there will be at least another three-year wait until season 3.

Euphoria is one of those [shows] that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on Idol, but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts,” Orsi tells Deadline. “We can’t start shooting, so the delivery of that show — ideally in 2025 — will be determined on when we can pick back up with Sam, who at this point is all pencils down and just finishing posts on Idol.”

What are the main reasons for Euphoria season 3’s delay?

Writer’s strike

Euphoria is the latest project to be postponed as a result of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, which also includes other hit shows like Stranger Things and The Last of Us. A greater residual payment for show writers is being demanded by the union in light of the growth of streaming services.

“The companies have used the transition to streaming to cut writer pay and separate writing from production, worsening working conditions for series writers at all levels. ” WGA tells Deadline.

The Idol‘s release

The show’s shoot schedule is also clashing with the actors’ busy schedules as they’re working on other projects while Sam Levinson is busy with The Idol. There *is* hope after all, Alexa Demie is rumoured to do a cameo as Euphoria’s Maddy Perez in an episode for The Idol.

While The Idol premieres in less than a week on June 4th (available for UAE audience to watch on OSN+), here’s the tea on what the rest of the cast is working on.

Lily rose depp and The Weeknd Abel Tesfaye for The Idol as Euphoria season 3 release is delayed.
