While 2021 has definitely offered more in the way of positivity than 2020, for some celebrities it’s also been the year they’ve decided to call time on their relationships. For some, that’s meant returning to former flames (we’re looking at you J-Lo) and for others, like Love Island faves Maura Higgins and Chris Taylor, it’s been about preserving their friendship. Here we take a look at all the celebrity splits of 2021.
Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello announced their split after two and a half years together in November, with a joint statement.
The Instagram Story read: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward. Camila and Shawn.”
Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline
Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline met on set of the Outer Banks, which was filmed in 2019, although they didn’t make their relationship Instagram official until June 2020.
But it wasn’t to be: a source told People in October 2021, “Madelyn and Chase are no longer together. They were trying to work things out privately but broke up a couple of months ago.”
Separately, another source confirmed that the pair had “definitely broken up.”
Kaia Gerber and Jacob Elordi
Kaia Gerber and Jacob Elordi apparently split after one year together in November. According to Page Six, things are “amicable.” It’s not clear why they broke up, but Kaia has since deleted all traces of Jacob from her Instagram grid. Always quite telling, eh?
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik reportedly split up in October after dating on and off since late 2015. The pair share a 13-month-old daughter Khai, who they welcomed just under a year after getting back together in 2019.
According to People, multiple sources have confirmed that the singer and model have now gone their separate ways again, with a Hadid family friend reportedly saying, “They are not together right now. They are both good parents though… They co-parent.
“Yolanda is of course very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild.” A representative for Gigi told the outlet that the model is “solely focused on the best for Khai” and “she asks for privacy during this time.”
Giovanni Pernice and Maura Higgins
In October, after four months together, Giovanni and Maura went their separate ways.
A source told The Sun, “It’s all over for now. Maura’s absolutely devastated. Pals are hoping that they can patch things up. But only time will tell whether they’ll work things out as Giovanni is so busy. He’s been focusing on Strictly, training his celeb partner Rose [Ayling Ellis] 24/7, and they’ve become really good friends. He’s even been learning sign language from Rose, showing it off on social media.”
Grimes and Elon Musk
The pair called it quits after three years as a couple in September. Page Six shared a statement from Elon which explained the pair are “semi-separated” but will continue to co-parent their one-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii Musk, who was born in May 2020.
Amelia Hamlin and Scott Disick
Scott Disick and Amelia Hamlin went their separate ways back in September after less than a year of dating, following leaked DMs from Scott to Kourtney Kardashian’s ex Younes Bendjima went viral.
In August, Younes shared a screenshot to his Instagram Story of an apparent message from Scott. The DMs in question saw Scott sending Younes a photo Kourtney had posted with her now-fiancé, Travis Barker. In the screenshot, Scott says: “Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy [sic].”
Younes replied, “Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy. PS: I ain’t your bro.” He also added separately, “Couldn’t miss this one. He been playing around too long, tried to stay quiet and be the nice guy [sic].”
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
After months of speculation, Kim filed for divorce from Kanye in February of 2021.
The couple tied the knot in May 2014, meaning they were married for six years. They have four children; North (7), Saint (5), Chicago (3), and Psalm (2).
Following the divorce, reports claimed Kim was feeling more “like herself,” with a source telling E! News, “The last year was extremely stressful and hard on [Kim]. She had hoped for so long that they could work things out and she didn’t want to give up. But now she took that final step, she feels like she can focus on the future and finally move on.”
Celebrity splits – J-Lo and Alex Rodriguez
J-Lo and Alex Rodriguez, who had been together for four years and engaged for two, announced their separation on 12 April.
In a joint statement, they said: “We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
Celebrity splits – Chris Taylor and Maura Higgins
Chris and Maura announced their split in May earlier this year.
They took to their Instagram Stories to share the sad news, with them both highlighting the importance of their friendship.
Maura wrote, “From the minute we met each other we have been very close friends and that will never change. There is no regret. Life is about taking chances. We wanted to make this work but we have realised we work better-being friends.”
While Chris shared, “We are both still on good terms and this was a mutual decision where nobody had done anything wrong. We will remain friends, as we have been since day 1 and I will always be in Maura’s corner and have her back.”
As amicable as it gets.
Celebrity splits – Addison Rae and Bryce Hall
Addison Rae and Bryce Hall called it quits in May after a year and a half on and off together.
After weeks of cheating speculation, Addison seemingly referenced their split in an appearance on The Zane Lowe Show. Speaking about creating her track, Obsessed, she referred to an “ex-boyfriend”, which many assumed was confirmation of their break up.
Celebrity splits – Zac Efron and Vanessa Valladares
After 10 months together, Zac Efron and Vanessa Valladares reportedly split in April, according to a report from Australian publication The Daily Telegraph.
The pair first got together in March 2020, after meeting at the Byron Bay General Store café where Vanessa was then working as a waitress. However, conflicting reports have since claimed they were engaged to be married… so who really knows with these two!
