Breakups are never easy, even when you’re an objectively successful and talented person who still seems to be on pretty good terms with your ex, like Shawn Mendes, for example.
Shawn has been teasing new music and in a recent video posted on Twitter and Instagram, he opened up about the personal feelings behind the songs’ lyrics. The 38-second clip features Shawn seated at a piano and speaking the truth about his current emotional state and how he’s coping (/struggling to cope) with life since he and Camila Cabello split last fall.
“You don’t realize when you’re breaking up with someone … all the stuff that comes after it,” he explains in the candid video. “Which is like, who do I call when I am, like, in a panic attack, who do I call when I am, like, on the edge, you know? And I think that’s the reality that kinda I am on my own now after like, finally I am actually on my own and I hate that … that’s my reality, you know.”
Shawn dropped the clip on IG and Twitter without any caption or explanation on either platform, but the content speaks for itself.

Shortly after Shawn and Camila revealed they had split in November, a source told People the breakup was caused more by clashing schedules that made it hard for the pair to spend much quality time together after quarantine.
“They had this intense relationship last year and spent months together during the lockdown in Miami. They both seemed very happy and looked like they enjoyed having a break from working,” the source said. “Things are different now though. It’s more back to normal life. They have careers that are taking them in different directions. They went from spending every day together to now not really spending any time together.”
In a joint statement released on their Instagram Stories at the time of the split, Camila and Shawn made it clear that they still had lots of love for each other (as humans/best friends, if not as S.O.s):
“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
Hopefully, this means Shawn is still able to lean on Camila as a best friend when he really needs someone supportive to call.
