We asked Botched’s Dr. Paul Nassif 6 burning plastic surgery questions…

Cosmo ME: What are some red flags to watch out for with plastic surgeons and aesthetic clinics?

Dr. Nassif: First and foremost, stay away if there are botched patients walking out. Before walking in, make sure the reputation of the clinic is fantastic. Make sure the doctor is a specialist whether it’s facial or general plastic surgery in the specific surgery that you desire.

Cosmo ME: How young is too young when getting plastic surgery?

Dr. Nassif: If it’s a nose job, which seems to be the most common procedure in the Arab culture, then the earliest is 15 years old for a young lady and 16 years old for a young man. At that age, the nose has matured. A lot of Middle Easterners come to me from the GCC and even in California and other parts of the US for their noses. My goals are always focused on breathing and making the nose look natural.

Cosmo ME: How is TikTok influencing the patients you’re seeing?

Dr. Nassif: There are a lot of unique trends on TikTok and I’ve seen plastic surgeons advertise their results on TikTok just like we do on Instagram. The problem is when potential patients put a lot of filters on their face and get into filter dysmorphia. They filter too much and look unrecognisable in real life. It always comes back to bite you.

Cosmo ME: What are things women out here can do to make sure they don’t get botched?

Dr. Nassif: If you’re interested in a particular surgery, make sure you’re a candidate. You must be healthy both physically and psychologically. Find the appropriate surgeon for that procedure, preferably, someone who is board-certified in that specialty, like a facial plastic surgeon like me. In the US, board-certified physicians are ones who are very qualified. To get the right result, you need to find a doctor like this and make sure they have a lot of experience and aesthetic artistry, You can find a surgeon who has great hands, but their aesthetics aren’t great and vice versa.

Cosmo ME: What steps should you take if you do get botched?

Dr. Nassif: A lot of patients don’t give their bodies enough time to heal. You might be swollen after surgery and the results aren’t there yet. You might think you’re botched, but in reality, you haven’t given it enough time to heal.

After you give it time to heal, if you’re comfortable, you can go back and speak to the first doctor after surgery. If not, you can always go to a specialist to see if you’re a candidate for revisional surgery.

Typically, the swelling for a nose job takes a full three years to dissipate. In year one, 85% of the swelling will go down. The last 15% takes a full two years.

Cosmo ME: How is AI influencing aesthetic medicine?

Dr. Nassif: I don’t know yet. I hear that there are a lot of programs and I don’t know much about them because it doesn’t affect what I do yet. I know that advertising and putting together content, it’s great. But how’s it involved in medicine yet? I have no clue but I’m sure it’s going to get better and better.

Cosmo ME: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Dr. Nassif: My goal, God willing, is to work again in Dubai like I did before and start seeing patients in the UAE within the next six months. I’d like to get NassifMD skincare out here as well. Lastly, season eight of Botched is wonderful and we have season nine coming up too.

Botched season eight premieres exclusively on OSNtv and OSN+ on 1 October.
