Jennifer Aniston is facing a backlash following a recent interview in which she made comments about fame that people found out of touch.
The Friends actor recently sat down for an interview alongside Sebastian Stan to speak about the realities of fame in 2022. During the interview, Aniston chatted about Stan’s recent role as Tommy Lee in the controversial series Pam & Tommy. While on the subject, Aniston discussed why the infamous sex tape leak had been so huge at the time, adding that it was around then that internet culture was really starting to emerge.
“… Right at the time when the internet really shaped a new culture about people becoming famous,” she told Variety. “This thing of people becoming famous for basically doing nothing. I mean — Paris Hilton, Monica Lewinsky, all those.”
She added, “I feel so lucky that we got a little taste of the industry before it became what it is today … More streaming services — you’re famous from TikTok, you’re famous from YouTube, you’re famous from Instagram.”
Finally, she said, “It’s almost, like, it’s diluting the actor’s job,” and well, this did not go down well on Twitter, with fans calling out the actor for the ‘out of touch’ comments, referencing the fact that her parents were the famous actors, Nancy Dow and John Aniston.
jennifer aniston (nepotism baby) wants to talk about diluting the actors job. right. https://t.co/ODZtBDzDVU

Jennifer Aniston’s parents were both millionaire actors embedded in the film industry. Their connections allowed for Aniston to have the career that she has. Not trying to minimise what she did in her career but I actually think some of this move away from industry elite is good.

No in a way I see what she’s saying but also both her parents are actors https://t.co/LqvuLdNOH8

Both her parents were experienced actors lol
If someone has talent and the only thing keeping them from success is the NEPOTISM *ahem*, discrimination, scarcity of opportunity in general, etc etc, why shouldn’t they use these networks to build a platform for themselves? Lol https://t.co/MPcmfYfWdB

people are so angry that the industry is more diverse, more inclusive of people from all backgrounds who had nothing but a phone to prop up to showcase their dream when their communities were probably underfunded and overlooked. let’s keep making em mad. https://t.co/HlcN2uedDB

While Jennifer has yet to respond to the response, some fans defended her comments saying that they believe the increase in platforms has meant that TikTokers or influencers are now sometimes given roles that traditionally would have otherwise gone to actors previously. Either way, people felt that her comments seemed slightly off-hand in the context.
