Tufting has officially swept through the FYP pages of TikTok (and taken over our home decor mood boards). The one brand that is firmly on our radar is Ghazlah Studio, a Saudi-based studio that’s rewriting the rules of carpets and rugs.

To know more about the home decor trend, we spoke to the founders Bassam Alkhulifi and Saud Alrasheed to know more about their brand up close and how to *exactly* style tufted art in your home.

CREATING GHAZLAH STUDIO

With the lockdown in motion, the two were on the hunt to find carpets that fit their aesthetics and unfortunately, couldn’t find any. “That’s when we started to know more about tufting and thought, ‘why not make our own rug?’”, said the founders.

Starting off as a mere hobby in 2020, soon became a viral obsession not just for Bassam and Saud but also had a tidal wave effect across the globe. “With many people’s attitudes on life-changing during the pandemic and many wishing for more joyous hobbies, we’re really seeing some shift on home décor. It brings new ideas to the surface and helps people learn more about home décor and be inspired by others,” they said.

BTS OF THE DESIGNS

Wondering what’s the creative process like? Us too. “Bassam always creates in solitude, so he designs the pieces, and then we reflect that on the piece by tufting together. We’re always inspired by nature, travelling, and trying new things. The more we get exposed to art and culture, the more we feel the urge to create; it’s very refreshing.”

Speaking of the longest time they’ve taken on an artwork, “We were once tufting for two straight weeks on a 2.10 * 1.62 meters rug. It was part of our recent spring collection and it had a different style than the ones we usually do.”

INTRODUCING TUFTING INTO YOUR HOME

In case you’re not sure about where to add your new tufted art purchase in your home, we’ve asked the experts to share some intel. “Incorporating a piece of rug in your home brings a warm and welcoming feel to your setting, especially with the cosy feeling rugs bring to a space. Know what style you’re going for and then pick the designs that match your style. Be sure to choose colours that match the overall theme.

Of course, the size also is very important; try to hang large pieces on high ceilings walls; the key is to make a statement without making the room feel busy. Also, a piece full of colours will pop up in a gradient one-colour room or even a monochromatic setting.”

WINTER DECOR? CHECK

Turns out, Ghazlah Studio has our winter home decor needs all sorted with new tufted art. With new collaborations on the roster, their winter collection will be out anytime now. “As always, we’re playing around with the materials to discover the madness of design when it collides with colors.” BRB, refreshing the app and patiently waiting on the new drop as we speak.
