The last time we spoke to Egyptian rapper Felukah, she was “shocked” that people were even listening to her music, despite being the cover star of the Arab X playlist on Spotify, and her songs even being featured on ‘Sawtik.’ It’s clear that the artist has come far ever since then. Dropping new music videos and following the success of her album (and our highlight of 2020,) ‘Dream 23,’ it’s obvious that the sultry singing rapper has been *busy*

For #Women’sHistoryMonth, Felukah (AKA فلوكا) dropped her single ‘What She Does.’ She’s even directed the music video for the song herself, and has highlgihted her some of her ‘friends who’ve been killing the game + exude a divine feminine/masculine energy.’

We spoke to the star about her songwriting process, the most inspiring women in her life, and what she has in store for the rest of the year.

Cosmo ME: So you’ve just released your single “What She Does” in honour of this women’s history month, what does this song mean to you, and what was your process writing it?

Felukah: What She Does” is an ode to empowering boss women everywhere. I wanted to honor women’s history month by spotlighting the work my friends and I do as creatives, healers and sisters for each other. There was zero hesitation writing this song, it was really just an expression of all things that ‘she’ does, and that could be anyone and in any capacity.

C: What would you say to the young women that want to go into rap/music like you have?

F: I encourage everybody to find a healing outlet, always. Coming into an art form to learn from it and to grow from it is one thing, and to any young girls out there who want to make music, I say don’t think twice! Experiment, learn and evolve. This is your pursuit of happiness.

C: Your song “Mesh Hastanna” is so powerful. How would you describe it to those who have never heard it before, or who don’t speak Arabic?

F: Mesh Hastanna” is a song I hold close to my heart; it translates from Arabic to “I Won’t Wait” and it was meant to symbolize the urgency for change in Muslim family law. Women are still being mistreated and the law is not in our favor, I teamed up with the renowned NGO Musawah to convey this message and empower women to keep fighting. We will not wait for things to magically get better, we will make the change ourselves.

C: Who are the most inspiring women in your life RN?

F: I’m inspired by so many. My mother is my greatest inspiration and source of light; I am also deeply inspired by Solange, Erykah Badu, Sevdaliza and FKA Twigs. The way these women elevate alongside their art… and truly breathe their experience out into their art. That’s the most inspiring thing of all.

C: What do you have in store for the rest of this year?

F: This year listeners can expect a versatile and interactive experience. I’m excited to announce a new art-healing workshop that I have been building, featuring live writing sessions, energy-cleansing exercises and more. It’s still in the works, but we’re planning to go live in April. I can’t wait. Alongside that is fresh tunes all the way through.
