Dubai-based singer Yas has definitely been keeping busy in quarantine. Whether she's posting her killer dance routines or powerhouse ballad-covers from home, it's no surprise that she has now released a new song. Not only is she an amazing performer, but through all this, Yas is also the founder of 'Yas Music & Dance', a complex in Dubai where you're able to sign up for lessons and attend classes. Oh, and did we mention she just turned 20 yesterday?

Yep, we were shocked too.

We sat down with one of our first Cosmo Shuffle & Play candidates to discuss her new single 'Not That Girl,' available on all platforms including Spotify, Anghami, Apple Music, and Deezer.

Cosmo: Tell us about your new song, Not That Girl?

Yas: It's about how people perceive me when they see me on Instagram, vs the real me in real life. I noticed a pattern, that when people would meet me in real life they would be like “Oh you’re so different from how I thought you would be”, which is spoilt, stuck-up, and I get everything handed to me - whereas that really isn’t true... I work hard!

C: Are you going to create a whole album ?

Y: Yes, I have five songs ready that I’m going to be releasing slowly, and will have a whole EP.

C: Which other artists are you inspired by right now?

Y: I’m honestly always inspired by Beyoncé... haha. She’s one of the most hardworking people and it really shows. I also love Ariana Grande and her music.

C: How has quarantine been affecting your creativity in terms of music and songwriting?

Y: Quarantine did affect me and my music since I was planning to release Not That Girl in March, however with the whole situation it just didn’t feel right. I was also supposed to be at the studio recording new songs however that obviously wasn’t possible...

C: What’s the first thing you want to do after quarantine?

Y: The first thing I want to do after quarantine, and when we can travel again, is go to LA. It’s my favorite place in the whole world. I go there every year for vocal and dance training.

C: If you weren’t a performer then what would you want to be?

Y: I’d definitely want to do something in fashion. Maybe a personal shopper?

C: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Y: I see myself living between Dubai and LA and doing what I love most which is performing! Hopefully performing all over the world, and of course continuing to record music, and hopefully I'll have multiple albums out by then!

C: If you could have created any iconic song, which would it have been?

Y: Survivor by Destiny’s Child!!

C: If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

Y: That’s a tough one. I’m going to say two: Whitney Houston or Justin Bieber.
