Cosmo ME: Ever since the release of Indian Matchmaking, you’ve amassed a huge fan following, but a lot of viewers have conflicting opinions about the idea of the show. How do deal with the backlash?

Aunty Sima: There are negatives and positives in everything. It’s unrealistic to expect only positive comments and viewers have the right to express their opinions. I’m a thick-skinned person so it doesn’t affect me. I don’t regret expressing my opinions at all. Different people have different thoughts, mentalities, and their own thinking patterns. So I don’t take it to heart. People do say that I’m old-fashioned, but I’ve only passed on the traditional Indian values to the world which has been going on for thousands of years. Some people may not agree with these thoughts now, but eventually, they might change their mind.

C: Times have changed massively, and more people are choosing to live their lives without a partner. Do you believe in the idea that people need to be married in order to feel fulfilled?

Aunty Sima: I believe that it depends on person to person. Nowadays, many young people want to have freedom in their life. They think that marriage limits you and that it ties them down. I do believe there with marriage comes a certain beauty in life. There’s happiness that comes with a family, and when you have kids. But if people want to live a life without commitments and they want to be free, I understand that.

C: Do you believe that it’s harder for a successful woman to find a partner suitable for her?

Aunty Sima: Yeah, I think so. Because when a woman acquires a certain level of education and success in her career, there seems to be a lot of inferiority complex from men. Men expect to be a step ahead, and the insecurity stems from them.

C: What advice would you give women looking for a partner?

Aunty Sima: Education is the most important aspect. If a person is educated, he can start life from anywhere and can earn at any point in life. Family background is also very important. The way you’re raised affects the way a man treats his family. You should always look at his education first before anything else.

C: Do you believe that there is a ‘right age’ that people should settle down by?

Aunty Sima: I was married at 19, and at that time people used to say ‘oh she’s grown up so much’. But a lot of things have changed now. I now believe that 28-30 years old is a good age for people to get married as they’ve studied and experienced things. But at the end of the day, it depends on people’s own timings in life.

C:  Our last question to you is, do you have any advice for men looking to get married?

Aunty Sima: In India, a lot of men only look at a woman’s beauty. If they don’t like her pictures, they don’t take the conversation forward and I’m strongly against that mindset. When you meet someone and you talk to them, you get to know them and that’s when you have to decide. You have to look at your compatibility. You cannot look at superficial qualities while looking for a partner, nor can you judge someone solely based on their looks. The way a woman thinks can affect the quality of a family.
