The holy month of Ramadan is upon us – not only is this a great time to recalibrate and cleanse the soul but it can also be the month to help you glow from the inside out. We’ve rounded up some tips from dermatologist, Dr Lana Kashlan and beauty expert and owner of Rerotti Hair & Beauty Salon, Mimi Rholam Jmean.
1. First things first, hydrate!!
While fasting, dehydration is a real struggle so be sure to drink lots of water after sunset. Try to drink eight glasses between iftar and suhoor to replenish and it’s best to avoid carbonated and caffeine drinks since they can also be dehydrating.
2. Be mindful of what you eat
Try to fuel up on a rainbow of vegetables and avoid processed foods and sugar which can wreak havoc on skin. It’s also good to avoid salty foods which can be dehydrating.
3. Take skincare time seriously
Dr Kashlan says her patients’ biggest complaint during this month is dull and dehydrated skin. “It’s important to focus on gentle exfoliation and moisturisation to get the best glow. For the face, I recommend using a glycolic acid peel once a week,” she says. She likes Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight to help remove dry, dull skin or Missha Super Aqua Smooth Skin Peeling Pads.

For extra hydration, she layers hyaluronic acid serum under a hydrocolloid mask like the Knesko Nanogold Repair Face Mask. “Hyaluronic acid attracts water so it’s great for hydration and the hydrocolloid mask helps to repair the skin barrier to trap moisture into the skin. This can be done nightly or a few times per week,” she recommends.

4. Always use SPF
Protecting your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays is always important. I love Vichy UV Protect SPF 50.

5. Haircare is major!!
Dehydration can also affect the health of hair. Beauty expert, Mimi Rholam Jmean says that many women come to her salon complaining about dry, brittle hair and even experience hair loss during Ramadan. “Being hydrated is very important. Once you’re dehydrated it can show up in the health of your hair. So during Ramadan I recommend clients to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner a couple of times week. Some clients even come in for nourishing hair treatments. The Olaplex treatment is one of our best sellers.

We recently introduced the Genesis Hair Treatment from Kerastase. It’s a new treatment that literally transforms your hair. It helps strengthen hair, prevents hair fall and makes hair look so shiny. I recommend clients to get one or two treatments during Ramadan,” she shared.
