Joyce Lau is changing the way we sleep, rest, and recharge, one bamboo sheet at a time. As the founder of NakedLab, she’s on a mission to redefine wellness from the bedroom out, blending sustainability, science, and serious comfort.
We caught up with Joyce to hear how she turned a personal search for skin-friendly bedding into a global bamboo bedding brand, what it really takes to build a mindful lifestyle company, and why rest is one of the most powerful forms of self-care.

Cosmo ME: What inspired you to start NakedLab?
Joyce: It was all driven by Pia’s needs. I wanted bedding that was non-toxic, breathable, and kind to her skin, and couldn’t find any. That’s when I discovered BambooSilk, a thermoregulating, hypoallergenic fabric that felt silky yet practical. It wasn’t trend-driven; it was a mother solving a problem. That gap inspired NakedLab’s mission.
Cosmo ME: Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to start NakedLab? Was there a personal moment that sparked the idea?
Joyce: As an architect, I loved designing and problem-solving, but everything changed once I became a mother. Seeing Pia’s skin react and understanding the impact of even simple bedding choices led me to research bamboo. The moment I felt that BambooSilk sheet and knew it was safe and luxurious was the spark that launched NakedLab .

Cosmo ME: Where and when did NakedLab begin?
Joyce: NakedLab began in 2018, right here in Hong Kong. I started with a single pink bamboo cot sheet for Pia. That first product resonated so strongly, both in function and feel that it encouraged me to move from architecture into full-time business ownership
Cosmo ME: What did the early vision look like, and how has it evolved?
Joyce: Initially, it was just about helping Pia sleep without irritation. But once I started using the bedding too, I saw how universal the need was. Word-of-mouth helped it grow organically from children’s bedding into adult collections, then loungewear, and even hotel partnerships. We’ve evolved into a wellness brand that delivers those blissful “on holiday” feelings every night .
Cosmo ME: What sets NakedLab apart from other brands in the bedding and wellness space?
Joyce: We aren’t trend-led, we’re solution-led. Our architectural sensibility means we obsess over every detail, from fabric performance to colour psychology. BambooSilk is safe, clean, breathable, and luxurious, but we also design our bedding to help make bedtime feel like a reset, not a hurry. That intersection between wellness, design, and everyday comfort defines us.

Cosmo ME: Can you walk us through the process of developing a new product?
Joyce: Every product we create goes through a long, hands-on development process. Even though NakedLab has now grown into a global brand, I still take every launch personally. I feel responsible for making sure what we put out into the world not only meets, but exceeds, the standard I’d want in my own home. We spend a third of our lives in bed, touching these materials for hours every night, so there’s no room for compromise.
The process always starts with a real-life need, often something I’ve personally experienced or heard repeatedly from our customers. From there, we begin sourcing, testing, and refining. We obsess over fabric quality, safety, performance, and the emotional experience of using it, because it’s not just about sleep, it’s about feeling better in your body and space.

Cosmo ME: What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Joyce: For me, two challenges stood out: educating people on BambooSilk’s benefits and scaling with integrity. Many weren’t familiar with bamboo fabrics, so it took real effort to share the science behind them. And even as demand grew, I was careful to avoid cutting corners on quality or sustainability. Visiting factories, securing Oeko-Tex certification, and managing home alongside business growth taught me how to prioritise what really matters.
Cosmo ME: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since launching NakedLab?
Joyce: That you can build something meaningful without chasing scale at all costs. We’ve grown NakedLab into a global business without taking on external investment, and that’s something I’m proud of. It’s been slower, but more sustainable, just like the products we make.
Personally, I’ve learned that you don’t need to do everything at once. I’ve learned to honour rest, trust my intuition, and focus on doing fewer things with more care. In the long run, that builds a stronger business and a healthier life.
Cosmo ME: Do you have a favourite in the collection? And why?
Joyce: I’ll always have a soft spot for Provence Butter. The colour feels like sunshine, joyful, uplifting, but it also carries this quiet nostalgia for me. I spend my summers in the south of France with my family, and this shade reminds me of those golden mornings and slow, happy days. Beyond the emotion, it’s a surprisingly versatile tone; it brightens up a room without being loud. It makes people smile the moment they walk into the bedroom, and I love that.

Cosmo ME: As a founder, how do you carve out space for rest and wellness yourself? Any rituals you swear by at the end of the day?
Joyce: For me, balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence. I like to start my mornings with movement, whether it’s a short workout or just stretching. I begin work early so I can finish early, and spend proper time with my kids in the afternoons. That’s my version of success. I also try to savour the little things: a good meal, an evening walk, a happy customer message.

It’s easy to get caught up in what’s next, but I’ve learned to slow down enough to enjoy what’s happening now. Celebrating the small wins has been just as important as chasing the big goals.
