There are a slew of face treatments that I have dutifully indulged in, in my time. From 24-carat gold facials to an under eye fat transfer to a Fotona laser procedure. They’ve each done their part in making me look well without being fundamentally altered.
But I have never put my scalp in the spotlight. It’s always escaped my attention – I guess the fact that my head of hair covers any ailing signs, is the reason for that. It’s a ‘seeing is believing’, kind of a thing.
Scalp scrubs however, are having a moment – because apparently, the skin on your scalp is no different to the skin on your face.
I went to Pastels on Al Wasl Road to try out their Hair Detox which takes the concept of a facial and translates it to a haircare protocol to restore and rejuvenate what lies beneath.
Now for starters, a hair wash at Pastels is more ceremonial than a fly-by routine. You’re horizontal for one, in the harmonising hands of a therapist who massages shampoo and conditioner into your hair with delicate dexterity for what feels like a deliciously long time. You know it’s good when you can feel the foaminess of the shampoo and conditioner taking on a life of its own.
After this wash of wonders (my hair was like a bale of hay beforehand), we moved onto the Kerastase Fusio Scrub – a range developed to deeply cleanse scale and remove the build-up of products and pollutants. Unbeknownst to me, I had a scalp on the scary side of dry and damaged.

You get the choice of two scrubs: Scrub Apaisant, a gel rub which hydrates and calms the hair, suited to almost all hair types and Scrub Energisant, a seasalt-based scrub that deeply cleanses the scalp and is the ideal choice for oily hair types. I went for the Scrub Apaisant. Don’t think it’s an aggressive scrub – there’s nothing laborious about it, just glorious.
The next 30 minutes involved being suspended somewhere between heaven and earth. I lost track of where we were in the treatment – somewhere along the way my therapist told me she was moving onto oil drops and a revitalising massage but I really didn’t register anything beyond the opulence of her oscillating movements. This part helps activate microcirculation to boost the scrub’s efficacy; and which will ensure the hair – and scalp – are in optimal condition for whatever treatment, if any, you choose to have after it.
I could tell my scalp was breathing better – like a window had been opened to a blast of Alpine air and life was good again.
My born-again mane was then treated to a Kerastase hair masque with another round of the best massage I didn’t know existed – honestly, this head massage had the same effect as a full body situation.
With hair as supple as a soft serve, the treatment coiled to an end with a ‘natural waves’ blow-dry.
I’ve had this hair for three days and the compliments are still coming in thick and fast as if it’s one-hour fresh. And my scalp is the least stressed it’s ever been…
