‘The UAE plans to build the first city on Mars’ – nope, it’s not the plot of a movie starring Matt Damon, it’s a very real exciting plan, announced by the UAE yesterday, called the Mars 2117 Project.

“#UAE unveils “Mars 2117 Project” to build the first inhabitable mini-city in Mars in partnership with major international institutions&firms,” the Dubai Media Office tweeted yesterday, along with incredible images of the planned city.

The outside of the dome:

“‘Mars 2117’ is a seed we are sowing today to reap the fruit of new generations led by a passion for science and advancing human knowledge,” His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, tweeted yesterday, after announcing the project.

“The project, to be named “Mars 2117″, integrates a vision to create a mini-city and community on Mars involving international cooperation,” HH Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid added of the 100 year plan, “We aspire in the coming century to develop science, technology and our youth’s passion for knowledge.
