It’s hard to imagine a time before hot girl walks, Stanley cups, and green juices.

TikTok trends have a way of seeping into our collective consciousness. For our generation, being health-conscious or on a “fitness journey” has become aspirational – a far cry from the “woo-woo” perception wellness had before the pandemic.

Now, of course, these trends take up a sizable portion of TikTok’s algorithm, and everyone seems to have an input.

So how trustworthy are the wellness trends flooding our feeds? Just ask Lima Fazaa, a DHA-licensed clinical dietitian and health coach at AIG Clinics & Dubai London Hospital. Lima breaks down all our favourite trends to decipher healthy habits from fleeting fads.

Sleepy girl mocktail 🍷 Honest review

What’s the tea? This viral recipe, usually a mix of tart cherry juice, magnesium and prebiotic soda, is touted as a sleep aid on our FYPs.

What’s the verdict? It should be renamed the Interrupted Sleep Mocktail. After sipping on this mocktail, you may wake up multiple times a night, due to its high sugar content, which can lead to over eating the following day. It’s better to ditch the sweet ingredients and just take the magnesium.

Magnesium Supplements

@danielleajeto trying again tonight to confirm because i cannot believe how amazing i felt today 👀 #magnesium #magnesiumbiglycinate #ned #mello #magnesiumforsleep #dallas #texas #rejuvinated #refreshed #deepsleep ♬ original sound – ☆☆☆

What’s the tea? Magnesium helps regulate neurotransmitters that are directly related to sleep, as well as taming anxiety, depression symptoms, and calming the central nervous system.

The verdict? Most people who take magnesium supplements don’t experience side effects, but magnesium can cause gut-related issues, especially when taken in large doses.

@lykagiftwellness 26 | 75 🎧 Here are the rules, All the best #wellbeingcoach #morningroutine #wellnessjourney #75hard #healthylifestyle #fitnessmotivation #wellnesscoach #mentalhealthawareness ♬ original sound – Lykagift | Wellness Coach🌱💫

What’s the tea? This fitness challenge is a strict regimen for 75 days that allows for no cheat meals and two daily 45-minute workouts.

What’s the verdict? It’s too strict and you’re unlikely to continue after the 75 days. It’s better to live a balanced lifestyle and implement manageable changes that you can stick to.

What’s the verdict? It’s ok as an addition to your daily diet but check the labels for preservatives and remember that greens powder is not a replacement for the real thing.

Liquid chlorophyll

What’s the tea? Chlorophyll is actually what gives plants and veggies their dark green colour. Benefits include cancer prevention, healing wounds, skin care and acne treatment, controlling body odour, and relieving constipation and gas.

What’s the verdict? It’s good, but it’s better to have a cup of spinach or kale per day instead

What’s the verdict? When taken too much of it, it will likely cause bloating and constipation. So it’s important to not have more than 1-2 tbsp per day.

Protein Coffee

@workoutsbychristina @esncom flexpresso >>> dissy %% “ CHRISTINA “ #eiwitrijk ♬ you already know jersey club – Ali Beats

What’s the tea? Caffeine can enhance metabolism and reduce the levels of hunger hormones produced by the body. Protein makes you feel fuller and demands more energy from the body to digest than carbohydrates or fats, making it a key component of a healthy diet.

What’s the verdict? A morning dose of protein can help launch you into day, especially when combined with the caffeine in coffee.

@tatlafata

If you’ve been here for a while you know I swear by my seamoss 🪸

♬ original sound – Tatyana

What’s the tea? Sea moss is a type of red algae also known as Irish moss. Consuming it can boost your immunity, and it supports your gut health and aids workout recovery. You can eat it raw and in supplement form in pills, powders, gels and gummies.

What’s the verdict? It shouldn’t be taken on a daily basis – twice a week is enough. Sea moss is a product of its environment, so its nutritional value depends largely on where it’s grown.
