On October 3rd, the *official* Mean Girls day, it was announced that a new Mean Girls movie will be released on January 12, 2024. Almost two decades after its original release, the cult classic movie is getting a highly-anticipated revival, but with a super fun twist.

Following the success of the original, the Mean Girls movie was later adapted into a Tony-nominated Broadway musical in 2018. Hollywood star Tina Fey, who wrote and directed the original movie, announced a screen adaptation of the Broadway show, reviving the iconic movie once again. It’s movie adaptation of the musical adaptation of the original movie… duh!

Paramount Pictures officially wrapped filming earlier this year, and with its release date now sooner than we thought – we’re SO ready to re-enter our Mean Girls era. So grab your army pants and flip flops, and let’s finally try to make ‘fetch’ happen..

Here’s everything we know about the new Mean Girls movie…

What will the Mean Girls musical movie be about?

Just as in the Broadway adaptation, we’ll see all our favorite characters return to their most iconic glory in the new Mean Girls movie. And we can’t wait to witness the revival of some of the movie’s most iconic one-liners! Whilst the new movie will follow the original plot, expect some truly spectacular musical numbers along the way.

The movie adaptation will likely take a more ‘pop’ approach to the Broadway musical, steering away from its uber-theatrical performance to appeal to a broader audience. Expect a modern twist on a cult classic with some seriously hilarious moments.

Who’s in the Mean Girls movie cast?

She doesn’t even go here (!!) Despite our love for the original cast, the new cohort for the movie is truly giving *iconic*!

Senior Year actress Angourie Rice is set to star as Cady Heron and Sex Lives of College Girls star Renée Rapp will reprise her Broadway role as the villainous queen Regina George.

Auli’i Cravalho, the voice actress behind 2016’s Moana, will play Janis, and Broadway actor Jaquel Spivey, will play Damian.

Angourie Rice’s Senior Year co-star, Avantika, is set to play the iconic Gretchen, and Bebe Wood will be reviving the hilarious Karen.

Cool mom Busy Phillips has been cast as Mrs. George, while The Summer I Turned Pretty star Christopher Briney will play Aaron Samuels (we’re team Conrad for this one)!

There are also some other iconic celebs joining the cast, including The Office star Jenna Fischer as Cady’s mother, and Jon Hamm as Coach Carr. We *can’t* wait!

Will we see any cameos from the original cast?

The best part about the new Mean Girls movie? Tina Fey and Tim Meadows have announced that they are stepping back into their movie roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall.

This is not a drill (!!) Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert reunited to film a ‘Mean Girls’ commercial together

There have been speculations as to whether the original ‘mean girls’ would return to make a cameo in the upcoming movie. In February, Amanda told Entertainment Tonight that she was “100 percent into” making an appearance.

This week, a new Walmart ad reunited some of our favorite OG cast members to step back into their respective roles.

Lindsay Lohan (who played Cady Heron), Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners), Daniel Franzese (Damian Leigh) and Rajiv Surendra (Kevin Gnapoor) have reunited for the commercial introducing Walmart deals for Black Friday. Queen Regina George herself, Rachel McAdams, is unfortunately not a part of the ensemble.

In the two-minute ad, we see a new generation of Plastics roaming the halls of North Shore High School and the OG characters are their parents. Recreating some of the movie’s iconic lines, this ad is giving us all the nostalgic feels!

Whilst this reunion likely means the OG plastics will not make a cameo in January’s new Mean Girls movie, we’re living for this ad nonetheless!

When will the new Mean Girls movie be released?

The Mean Girls musical movie will be released on Jan. 12, 2024 in selected theaters globally and directly via Paramount+. After a Barbie-filled summer, we can’t wait for another excuse to wear pink to the cinema (especially if it’s a Wednesday)!
