Listen up, fashion loversss with a conscious! These two guys, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, have crafted leather out of cacti, and we are amazed. The eponymous brand, Desserto, is a first-of-it’s-kind company where leather is made without toxic chemicals, phthalates, or PVC – all subtances that are extremely harmful to the environment.Â
Leather is also non-biodegradable and therefore unrecyclable. It builds up in landfills, emitting harmful greenhouse gases, and contributing to climate change.Â
Another bonus of cactus leather, is that it doesn’t use as much water, due to the plant’s ability to grow in the torrid desert temps.Â
Desserto use natural dyes, which are also eco-friendly, allowing us to buy leather in many colours that would perfectly suit our personal styles. AND the price? Cactus leather is the same as animal leather. Literally no difference, except you’re buying without having to feel guilty.Â
Pineapple leather is another material that has popped up of late, and we can’t get enough of these vegan options.Â
