We all know that the Ramadan glow is real. 🌙✨

But amidst the deep reflections and delicious pre-dawn and post-sunset feasts, sudden routine changes can impact skin health in many ways. We’ve enlisted the wisdom of two skincare experts to spill the tea on how Ramadan fasting impacts our skin—both the good and the not-so-good.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, skin issues and concerns can arise due to various factors. “Fasting alters hormone levels”, explains Dr. Raja at Derma Aesthetics London, “this can lead to excess oil production and clogged pores. Additionally, reduced water intake during fasting can lead to dehydration, causing dryness and dullness. Stress and fatigue during this period could also contribute to skin issues”.

Maintaining a good, hydrating skincare regime is crucial for the Ramadan period, as Dr. Raja suggests,

“To support skin health, it’s essential to prioritize hydration and a consistent skincare regimen throughout Ramadan. Regular exfoliation, at least once a week, is essential to eliminate dead skin cells and promote healthier skin”.

“For an added bonus, opt for treatments like Full Facial Harmonisation, Face Sliming and Exosomes, which can keep your skin looking and feeling its best. Hydration and a good skincare routine can improve skin quality during Ramadan. Hydrafacial treatments can also help maintain skin health”.

Could fasting actually improve your skin?

But fear not. So long as you maintain a hydrating skincare routine, fasting does, on many occasions, positively affect your skin health. As Dr. Yulia Krasnaya of evoclinic.ae suggests,

“Fasting leads to decreased consumption of sugary and processed foods, (which contributes to skin issues such as acne and inflammation). Instead, individuals may opt for healthier, nutrient-rich foods during the pre-dawn and post-sunset meals, which can support skin health and improve complexion”.

The detoxifying properties of fasting can also play a positive role in cell turnover. “Research suggests that intermittent fasting can enhance autophagy, a cellular process that removes damaged components and toxins from cells” suggest Dr. Krasnaya. “This cleansing mechanism may improve skin clarity and radiance by eliminating harmful substances”.

“Additionally, excess body fat is associated with inflammation and hormonal imbalances, exacerbating skin conditions such as acne and eczema. By reducing body fat through fasting and healthier eating habits, individuals may experience skin texture and tone improvements”.
