It’s no secret that everyone is getting divorced these days. From Miley Cyrus’ divorce to Katie Holmes breakup, it almost makes us wonder if real love exists. This is serious guys. Statistics show that 50 per cent of marriages end in divorce. That’s really depressing.
Most of our fave celebs are no stranger to divorce. Check out the shortest celebrity marriages and take notes guys! We could all learn a thing or two.
1. Zsa Zsa Gabor and Felipe de Alba: 1 day
In 1993 Zsa Zsa married Felipe. The marriage was annulled because Zsa Zsa was still legally married to her first husband Michael O’Hara.
The Lesson: Do your research. Find out if bae is married, divorced, has kids or baby momma’s or if their seeing anyone else.
2. Britney Spears and Jason Alexander: 55 Hours
In 2004, Britney got married in Las Vegas to her childhood BFF Jason Alexander. 55 hours later, the couple annulled their marriage. In an interview that aired on E! Spears described her actions as “silly” and “irresponsible”. The couple cited that they were “incompatible” as they “did not know each other’s likes and dislikes, each other’s desires to have or not have children, and each other’s desires as to state of residency”.
The Lesson: There is a fine line between friendship and marriage. If you and bae do not agree on the fundamental issues, your relationship doesn’t stand a chance.
3. Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman: 9 Days
Another Vegas wedding…*rolls eyes*
The extravagant basketball player married the hot actress from Baywatch in 1998. Rodman’s publicist had a lot of concerns regarding the mental state of the couple. He states that Rodman was “deeply intoxicated” at the time. (Ya think?!) Anyway, the pair got an anullment nine days later.
The Lesson: NEVER make any major life-changing decisions when you are not thinking clearly. Some decisions might be impossible to reverse.
4. Cher and Gregg Allman: 9 Days
In July 1975, Cher and rocker Allman got hitched in Vegas. FYI, Cher’s divorce from her ex was just finalized days ago. Nine days after getting married again, she filed for another divorce when she discovered that she couldn’t handle Allmans’ addictions.
The Lesson: You might be aware of your partner’s bad habits before you get married. You might convince yourself they will change later on. THEY WON’T.
5. Drew Barrymore and Jeremy Thomas: 39 Days
It’s no surprise that Drew Barrymore would end up on this list. She is notorious for having a bad childhood. In 1994, when Drew was only 19-years-old, she married 32-year-old Jeremy Thomas. He was a bar owner in L.A. They got married after knowing each other for only six weeks. Surprise surprise, Drew filed for divorce 39 days later. Clearly, there were no adults in that relationship!
The Lesson:*sighs deeply* Just don’t do that!
6. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries: 72 days
This is probably the most famous couple on this list. In August 2011, reality star Kim K married NBA player Kris Humphries. In October, the pair filed for divorce. Although many view this as a publicity stunt, both stars insist that they were in ‘love’.
The Lesson: Take sufficient time between the engagement and the wedding. This will give both of you some much needed time to decide if you are soulmates.
7. Nicky Hilton and Todd Andrew Meister: 85 Days
Paris Hilton’s younger sister, Nicky Hilton married businessman Todd Meister. The couple had a Vegas ceremony in August 2004. Naturally, the marriage was annulled in November. At this point, chapels in Vegas should issue both marriage and divorce licenses at the same time.
Hmmm… do you think Kim K tried to beat Nicky’s record by getting divorced 13 days earlier?
The Lesson: Don’t get married in Vegas. Also, surround yourself with people who genuinely have your best interests at heart. They are more likely to steer you in the right direction.
8. Lisa-Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage: 107 Days
Action star Nicolas Cage got married to Lisa Presley (YES, she is the daughter of Elvis Presley!). In August of 2002, the couple actually had a very luxurious wedding in Hawaii. By November, Cage filed for a divorce stating “we shouldn’t have been married in the first place.”
The Lesson: Not every relationship is meant to last. Sometimes, you have to keep searching before you find your soulmate.
9. Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush: 163 days
Chad and Sophia met on the set of One Tree Hill, and as their TV characters fell in love, so did the actors. The couple were engaged for a year before they decided to tie the knot in 2005. However, 5 months later, the couple filled for annulment. They were officially divorced a year later. There were rumours that Chad cheated on Sophia with Paris Hilton. Bush kinda confirmed this rumour in an interview with People magazine, “It’s not that I don’t respect other women in my position, but there are things I won’t forgive. I have too much going on in my life to focus on.”
Yikes!
The Lesson: if your partner has been unfaithful, you can choose to fix the relationship or you can leave. There is no wrong choice. However, if you choose to stay, you have to work twice as hard to earn back their trust.
10. Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly: 309 days
Carrey and Lauren met on the set of Dumb and Dumber and got married on September 23, 1996. Unfortunately, 10 months later the couple filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences”. The relationship was going well until their relationship became public of their relationship and the press became too ‘invasive’.
The Lesson: Outside pressure can strain the relationship. Friends, family and colleagues don’t need to be involved in the relationship. This was a short list but we all learnt some valuable lessons. Sometimes we are just looking for companionship or we just fear being alone. If you are in a relationship, think seriously about your motives. Is it love? Is it loneliness? How much do you really know about this person? Would you spend forever with them?
Just remember:
