2018 was quite the iconic year! We saw some amazing movies, killer tunes rise to the top of the music charts and, some of the most unbelievable celeb scandals make headlines all over the world. When it came to drama and controversies, 2018 might just have taken the crown! But hey, who doesn’t love a little drama every now and then? *sips tea*
Team Cosmo had a lot of thoughts concerning 2019 (waaay too many, if we’re being honest), which eventually led us to having a sit-down at our HQ, where we came to an agreement (things got a little heated btw and harsh words may have been said) regarding the major hits and misses of this year.
Here’s everything and everyone who literally made 2018 amazing!
2018 was Ariana's year and there's no denying it! With chart toppers like 'No Tears Left to Cry', 'God Is a Woman' and of late, the insanely popular 'Thankyou, next', Ari killed it, despite battling heartaches and anxiety. We are in awe of this li'l diva and, think eveyrone should take a page out of Grande's book. She turns her heartaches into successes, and we can all use a little bit of that.
'thank you, next' by Ariana Grande
A peppy ode to past loves and exes and the official break-up anthem of the year, 'thank you, next' broke records and hearts (might I add).
- The track smashed YouTube’s all-time record for most views in the first 24 hours of release, garnering a record 55.4 million views.
- In addition, 'thank u, next' set the record for most-viewed video that used YouTube’s Premiere scheduling feature with 829,000 viewers watching simultaneously at its peak.
- Grande fans sent over 516,000 chat messages during the video debut, also a record for YouTube Premieres. The initial traffic spike caused a delay in comments posting to the video, according to YouTube. Imagine having all that success and still being as humble as Ari... Just remarkable.
Shawn Mendes by Shawn Mendes
Shawn's latest self-titled album blessed us with beautiful hits like 'Lost In Japan', 'In My Blood' and ‘Mercy’. Fun fact: The Grammy's must have found this album simply incredible because he received a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year for 'In My Blood' and Best Pop Vocal Album. There's the Shawn we all know and love!
BEST CELEBRITY COUPLE
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
The cutest couple on social media and IRL, these two make us love love even more.
SADDEST CELEBRITY BREAKUP
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan
We've loved them together since their 'Step Up' days and their breakup earlier this year was just heart-breaking. We still get a bit teary every now and then...
BEST CELEBRITY SCANDAL
Nicki Minaj and Cardi B
When the two female rappers crossed paths, things got a little (an understatement in our opinion) messy. Cardi B throwing her shoe at Nicki definitely made our 2018 highlight reel! Some might even say, century. Lest we forget the infamous picture of Cardi leaving the Harper's Bazaar Icons Party with a massive bump on her forehead.
BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR
Black Panther was a huuuge win for diversity and didn't disappoint one bit! Also, Michael B Jordan is BAE. Enough said. Wakanda forever!
BEST TV SHOW
The Haunting Of Hill House
This trippy psychological horror managed to keep us awake for days. Also, we have so many questions even after hours of research into the show. We were literally over the moon when they renewed it for a second season. We'll be waiting IMpatiently till then.
TV SERIES TO LOOKOUT FOR IN 2019
Game of Thrones
It's the final season of the iconic HBO series and, if the teasers and hype haven't got you excited, then I don't know what will!
MOVIE TO LOOKOUT FOR IN 2019
Toy Story 4
My inner child is SCREAMING!
BREAKOUT STAR OF THE YEAR
The 20 year old's soulful R&B sounds, which included the likes of "Ocean", "Love Lies" and "Eastside" had us all in a dreamy trance. We really can't wait to hear more from him.
ARTIST TO LOOKOUT FOR IN 2019
Justin Bieber/Miley Cyrus
Now a married man, Justin has hinted at new music coming our way and he never fails, like HOW GOOD WAS Purpose?? Also, after a short but noticeable hiatus, Miley Cyrus is making music again and, we expect some really epic tunes! Until then, we'll be playing 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart", every single day, at least four times a day.
BEST TOUR OF 2018
Astroworld by Travis Scott
Is it a concert ? Is it an amusement park? No one knows really but it's a blockbuster tour for sure! We and Kylie Jenner approve.
MAN CRUSH OF 2018
Peter Kavinsky from 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before'. Need I say more ?
GIRL CRUSH OF 2018
The 'New Rules' singer was ballin' this year, with numerous hits like 'One Kiss' and 'Electricity' making her one of the most streamed artists on Spotify this year. The Albanian born, UK raised stunner has also been nominated for not one but two Grammys! We have a feeling that Dua's musical reign is just getting started. Well done girlie, you deserve all the love and more!
BEST MUSICAL COLLABORATION OF 2018
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga for 'Shallow' from the 'A Star Is Born' Soundtrack
Give 'Shallow' a million Grammys already!
BEST ON-SCREEN COUPLE OF 2018
Mr and Mrs Incredible
This adorable couple managed to steal our hearts with quirky statements and ability to compromise. We love them now, just as much as we did when the first film came out 10 years ago, if not, more.
BEST DRESSED CELEBRITY OF 2018
All the way from her 'Gossip Girl' days to now, this gorgeous soul has never ceased to stun us. She's a vision and, so is her wardrobe! We can't get enough of her sleek and effortless fashion sense, and no one, I repeat NO ONE can work a suit the way Blake Lively can.
