Football jerseys have transitioned from pitches to pavements, becoming a fashion staple rather than just being reserved for match days. And with the World Cup quickly approaching, the trend shows no signs of slowing.
Taking over TikTok, Pinterest moodboards, and even your favourite influencer’s Instagram carousel, football shirts have become the IT girl’s uniform this summer.
As Gen Z shifts the meaning of wearing jerseys from a symbol of loyalty to a reflection of personal style, jerseys have become more than just sportswear.
So, how did we get to Blokecore?
Inspired by 90s football culture, “blokecore” combines vintage football jerseys with casual streetwear, making football shirts a mainstream fashion trend.
Blokecore originated in British football culture and gained a new audience via TikTok and Instagram, where fashion creators began styling football shirts as statement pieces regardless of their knowledge or history with the team.
Starting as a nostalgic form of expression, football jerseys have turned into a versatile trend that has taken over our feeds. Jerseys are being styled with everything from baggy jeans and Sambas to mini skirts and statement chunky jewellery, putting an end to the argument that sportswear can’t be chic and comfortable all at once.
UAE-based creator Nayer Gadi recently partnered with JD Middle East on a reel, choosing which team she would root for in the World Cup based solely on which jersey had the best design (it seems there’s a winning team already – fashion wise ofc!). It’s a sign of how style is becoming just as important as the sport itself. In another post, she and her fellow UAE-based creatives styled football jerseys for a Dè Favela event, proving that football shirts are no longer just for stadiums and game days.
It’s simply challenging the notion that sports and femininity can’t coexist, which makes this Blokecore the ideal “It Girl” look.
Why does the World Cup matter?
Major sports events have always intertwined with fashion, but the World Cup brings something unique: a sense of global excitement and unity.
Unlike a typical football season, the World Cup attracts the attention of people who wouldn’t normally follow the sport. New kits are released, national pride becomes more visible, and football-related content takes over social media feeds. As a result, jerseys have evolved into cultural symbols rather than just sports merchandise.
The intersection between sport and fashion is becoming more visible throughout the region. Nora Al Shaikh, a Saudi designer, recently released a modest fanwear concept for female Al-Nassr supporters, redefining the scene through a fashion lens and creating pieces tailored specifically for women. It just shows how much football-inspired style is evolving beyond traditional fan merchandise.
The whole trend has evolved from “Name five players on the team?” to “Which team do you think has the best jersey design?”
Here’s how you can style Blokecore
The beauty of the trend is its versatility. You can style it for a casual model-off-duty look with an oversized jersey, your favourite straight-leg denim, or even a pair of New Balance 740s.
The appeal of this look comes from its effortless balance. The oversized silhouette of a football jersey is also commonly paired with structured denim, giving it a relaxed street-style aesthetic that’s gained traction on TikTok, Pinterest moodboards (we’re also in the same boat), and off-duty model looks. Or perhaps you prefer the chic route? You can opt for a more elevated look with a satin maxi skirt, cute sandals, and staple gold jewellery, taking the outfit from sporty to fashion-forward. You can even match hijab colours to your jerseys, layering them over colourful long-sleeve tops and tailored trousers.
The trend’s versatility is a major reason for its rapid growth in our region, where designers have adapted football jerseys to fit modest wardrobes through layering, colour coordination, and tailored silhouettes.
The jerseys might have started on the pitch, only worn by die-hard fans, but they now belong in Instagram dumps, brunch with the girls, and everywhere in between, especially now that it’s officially World Cup season.
And honestly? You never needed to know the offside rule to pull one off.
You need to add these Lebanese beauty brands to your list if you want to go full-glam.
