The Weeknd has officially dropped his stage name. 😲
He took to social media to change his name to Abel Tesfaye, his birth name, not long after vowing to retire his stage name. As reported by Variety, the Blinding Lights singer revealed, “I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd.”

Before taking on the alter ego of The Weeknd, Abel made music as Noise and Kin Kane. He finally ended up settling on the name that popularised him as a homage to the time he “left one weekend and never came home.”
Why is The Weeknd dropping his stage name?
The R&B singer is currently working on his upcoming album which he says will be the last time he’s releasing music using his pseudonym.

According to Entertainment Weekly, he said, “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as the Weeknd… This is something that I have to do. As the Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.” He continued, “But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
The Idol star has hinted at the fact that his upcoming album will be a part of a trilogy. Fans think this trio includes After Hours, Dawn FM, and the soon-to-be-named record.

We don’t know when or under what name Abel’s next album will be released but we cannot wait for new music! Keep an eye out for more information.
