Bucking the trend of sequels that don’t quite live up to their originals (we’re looking at you, Mean Girls 2, Grease 2 and Frozen 2), I am pleased to say that not only is the new Wonder Woman 1984 as soon as the first film – it’s actually better. There has certainly been a pent-up desire since the first 2017 release, which took $822m globally, and WW84 does not disappoint.

The story picks up with titular character Diana (Gal Gadot), who hasn’t aged a day due to her supernaturally long life, in Washington, D.C. working in the anthropology and archaeology department of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and spends her spare time keeping pedestrians safe. Her next chapter finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah, all the while her love interest from the first film (Chris Pine) returns under mysterious circumstances.

Our favourite part? Kristen Wig, of course. The actress plays Barbara Ann Minerva, a clumsy, nerdy historian (a role that Kristin effortlessly takes on, as you can imagine) who is beguiled and eventually corrupted by her one true desire to be exactly like Diana.

Director Patty Jenkins is back at the helm, and has given us a nostalgic look back to a beloved time that provides escapism from an exceptionally difficult year, where people have never needed a superhero more. A notable improvement on its already pretty great predecessor, WW84 is the perfect movie to end 2020 on a high.

WW84 is released worldwide in cinemas on 17 December, and will be shown in socially distances screens operating at 50% capacity across the UAE.Â
