Gal Gadot has been cast to play Cleopatra in a new movie about the Egyptian ruler’s. Patty Jenkins, the creative brains behind Wonder Woman, will lead the epic biographical drama and Paramount Pictures productions.

“As you might have heard I teamed up with @PattyJenks and @LKalogridis to bring the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, to the big screen in a way she’s never been seen before,” writes the actress on her Twitter page. “To tell her story for the first time through women’s eyes, both behind and in front of the camera.”

“I love embarking on new journeys, I love the excitement of new projects, the thrill of bringing new stories to life. Cleopatra is a story I wanted to tell for a very long time. Can’t be more grateful about this A team!”

The news has been met with some backlash on social media from fans who are divided about the heritage of Cleopatra. Many have called the film out for not hiring and Egyptian actress to play the role.

Whilst others have been backing Gal, starting that Cleopatra was, in fact, of Greek origin.

The first 1963 Cleopatra film starred Elizabeth Taylor in the eponymous role. Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Roddy McDowall, and Martin Landau are featured in supporting roles. It chronicles the struggles of  the young Queen of Egypt, to resist the imperial ambitions of Rome.
