Cosmo sat down with Syrian designer Rami Ali, whose designs seamlessly dominate most red carpet events. Helen Mirren, Kelly Rowland and Chanel Iman are amongst those that have showcased his designs on red carpets, Rami continuos to take the fashion world by a storm one dress at a time.
What’s the last thing that made you angry?
Failing to modify a cake recipe that I was excited to bake. It was a Japanese baked cheesecake, that end up looking like deformed pizza from a cheap diner.
If you could have been anything other than a designer, what would it be?
I would have loved to be a dancer; sadly I have two left feet. I have always been intrigued and impressed by all types of dance performances. Body language is truly fascinating.
If you could have designed any iconic dress in the world, what would it have been? (Can be anything from Cinderella’s gown to Princess Diana’s wedding dress)
The wedding dress of Grace Kelly; it was such a historical moment. The marriage of a movie star to a prince, it was the epitome of a happy ending for a romantic story, making every girl’s dream a reality. It's the combination of silver screen glamour with monarchy sophistication.
What’s the weirdest outfit request you’ve ever had from a client?
Adding real vintage gold coins to a Henna outfit, designed exclusively for a client. She received this precious gift from her in-laws and wanted to show her appreciation to them through the creative display of such a gift.
Talk us through the most awkward run-in you’ve had with another celebrity?
The first time I met Naomi Campbell in Dubai 1998, for the inauguration of fashion café. I was so nervous meeting a huge celebrity for the first time in my life, I introduced myself as Naomi Cambell! She burst laughing and said, "Who am I then?"
Do you have a party trick?
I'm the King of a French Exit; I always leave the party when it’s at its peak.
What’s your worst habit?
Rushing things, I'm so impatient. I’m trying with practice to overcome it.
In a film about your life, which actor would play you and why?
Timothée Chalamet, I would like to think that he would be a great resemblant of the younger me, but mostly for his impeccable performance and remarkable acting skills.
