Moroccan athlete Nouhaila Benzina just made history, y’all! She became the first football player *ever* to wear a hijab during a FIFA Women’s World Cup match. It took place earlier this week in Melbourne.

Nouhaila was a substitute in the Group H match against Germany, the two-time World Cup champions. And even though her team didn’t manage to win, we literally witnessed a historic moment. Not only because Morocco became the first Arab and North African nation ever to be in the tournament (pretty cool, huh?) but also because Nouhaila Benzina wearing a hijab during the game is a huge statement, and let us tell you why.

Here’s how Nouhaila Benzina wearing a hijab at a match is iconic…
Hijabs, as well as other head coverings, were banned in 2007 because of “health and safety” concerns. FIFA recalled them due to choking hazards. Seven years later, the ban was lifted, which eventually stimulated the interest of our Muslim gals in football.

Now, Nouhaila Benzina spread a huge message that everyone belongs, and we love inclusivity. So, hopefully, we can see many more girls wearing hijab on the field in the future!
