Erim’s journey began with a deep-rooted connection to her heritage. Guided by her Dhadi, her beloved grandmother, and the keeper of magical and traditional Indian haircare remedies, they embarked on a mission together. In her grandmother’s kitchen, Erim and Dhadi tirelessly experimented with an array of peculiar and unconventional combinations. And after years of trial and error, a moment of triumph arrived—the discovery of a formula that truly worked wonders. With unwavering determination, she nurtured her creation and brought it to life. Fast forward 15 years, and ByErim was born, a brand that has redefined luxury hair care and beard care.

Now, Erim is here to demystify the haircare landscape. In our exclusive interview, she reveals the truth behind common hair myths and sheds light on the misconceptions that have plagued us for far too long.

Keep reading to get the tea on some common haircare myths that Erim Kaur has debunked for us…

Cosmo ME: What are some of the most common hair myths you encounter in the haircare industry?

Erim Kaur: I think the most common myths are related to the usage of products. For example, some might say that using a larger amount of shampoo and conditioner will clean your hair better. Using excessive amounts of hair product can lead to buildup which will only weigh down your hair and make it appear greasy.

Cosmo ME: Does trimming your hair regularly makes it grow faster?

Erim Kaur: No, this is another hair myth. Your hair grows from your scalp, where your roots are. Trimming hair will only alleviate the problem of split ends. Trimming every 4-6 weeks can help hair look healthier, but it will not speed up the growth process. It is always recommended to use a hair oil like the ByErim Luxury Hair and Beard Oil to stimulate the follicles and give those early hairs the moisture and strength they need to grow.

Cosmo ME: Many people believe that washing hair every day leads to excessive oil production. Can you shed some light on this myth and explain the proper frequency of hair washing?

EK: Every individual has a unique scalp which can be naturally oily or dry. The key is to wash your hair according to your specific needs. What may work for one person may not be suitable for you. It’s important to assess your hair, observe how it looks and feels after a certain period, and determine if it truly requires washing or if it’s just your perception that it needs to be washed. On the days where you want your hair to just be clean, I’d recommend using a co-wash shampoo.

Cosmo ME: There’s a widespread belief that brushing your hair 100 times a day promotes hair growth. Is there remotely any truth to this myth?

EK: Stimulating the hair follicles on your scalp by brushing can indeed improve blood flow and enhance activity. However, it’s important to note that hair growth goes through three distinct phases, and certain factors like acute stress and dietary choice can have an impact on this. I would suggest trying the ByErim Luxury Hairbrush, which is crafted from natural bamboo and features both long and short vegan bristles. This brush effectively penetrates the hair, gently detangling it without causing breakage. It works exceptionally well, especially for individuals with thick or coyly hair.

Cosmo ME: Is it true that using heat styling tools regularly will permanently damage your hair? How can one minimize the potential damage caused by heat styling?

EK: Engaging in bleaching, heat styling, and chemical treatments can be highly detrimental to the health of your hair. While completely avoiding all three may be challenging, it’s advisable to select only one of these practices and commit to it. If heat styling is a regular part of your routine, make an effort to minimize its damage by employing heat protection products. Heat tends to deplete moisture from the hair and alters its internal structure. Incorporating the ByErim Shampoo & Conditioner into your haircare routine will provide ample hydration and help reduce brittleness. The shampoo and conditioner feature natural extracts like rosemary, root ferment, and lactic acid, which nourish your hair strands, leaving them soft to the touch.

Cosmo ME: What is the truth behind the myth that plucking out one grey hair will result in more grey hairs growing in its place?

EK: This is not accurate. If you pluck out a grey hair, it is unlikely that more will grow in its place. Hair follicles responsible for pigment loss, such as greying, are not necessarily interconnected unless there is a specific condition like alopecia. If you are not experiencing natural greying over time, plucking grey hairs does not typically result in a higher number of them growing back. In most cases, only the specific hair that was plucked will regrow in its place.
