Kylie Jenner’s social influence has never been doubted; it’s impossible to argue with her 104 million Instagram followers and estimated Dhs179 million personal worth.

So it seems likely that the owners of Snapchat are kicking themselves after their shares plunged 6 percent this week – costing more than Dhs4 Billion according to Reuters – seemingly because Kylie tweeted that she doesn’t open the app any more.

“Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me… ugh this is so sad,” she wrote to her 24.5 million Twitter followers.

Shortly after the tweet Snap – Snapchat’s parent company – stocks closed at Dhs62, down from Dhs69 the previous day.

She later tweeted a follow-up: “still love you tho snap… my first love”.

Snapchat has faced criticism from users since its most recent update, with complaints that the new version is difficult to navigate. Over 1.2 million people have signed a Change.org petition hoping the company reverses the update, and since the full rollout, the app has been getting thousands of one-star ratings in the App Store.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel said “We’re excited about what we’re seeing so far. The best part is that even some of the complaints we’re seeing reinforce the philosophy [behind the change].

“One of the complaints we got was ‘Aww…I used to feel like this celebrity was my friend, and now they don’t feel like my friend anymore,'” Spiegel added. “And we’re like, ‘Exactly. They’re not your friend.'”

Way harsh, Spiegel. Looks like Kylie isn’t your friend now, either.
