Whether you love it or loathe it, Emily in Paris is the Netflix show on everyone’s lips at the moment. From Patricia Field’s eccentric styling of protagonist Emily, played by Lily Collins, to the representation of French culture, the show sure has got people talking. But now, creator Darren Star has said that he is ‘not sorry’, and that the show is actually a ‘love letter to Paris’.
The French media in particular have been rather vocal about the representation of French people and French culture in the show, with lots of stereotypes being played up. Darren Star explains the reasoning for the stereotypes as ‘the first thing she is seeing is the clichés because it’s from her point of view’, continuing by saying that he is ‘not sorry for looking at Paris through a glamorous lens’.
In the interview with The Hollywood Reporter he also said that he enjoyed writing female characters, ‘I find it easy to see the world from their point of view’. The creator is a dab-hand at creating strong female characters, having already given us Sex and The City and Younger with Hilary Duff. ‘They have challenges’, he says, ‘they may not be mine, but I can relate to them’.
Still no news on an Emily in Paris Season 2, though!
