Sophie Turner is an actress in Game of Thrones, one of the most popular TV series ever to exist – but even that doesn’t make her immune from mental health issues.
As the eighth and final series of Game of Thrones begins, the 23-year-old has spoken candidly on a podcast with Dr. Phil about some dark thoughts she experienced at the beginning of her acting career.
Being just 17 when she started filming GOT, Sophie revealed she found the harsh criticism of herself on social media difficult to deal with.
“People used to say, ‘Wow, Sansa gained 10 lbs’ or ‘Wow, Sansa needs to lose 10 lbs’, or ‘Sansa got fat.’ It was just a lot of weight comments,” explained the actress, who’s engaged to Joe Jonas.
“Or I would have spotty skin, because I was a teenager, and that’s normal, and I used to get a lot of comments about my skin and my weight and how I wasn’t a good actress.
“I would just believe it. I would say, ‘Yeah, I am spotty. I am fat. I am a bad actress.’ I would just believe it. I would get [the costume department] to tighten my corset a lot. I just got very, very self-conscious.”
The comments took a toll on Sophie, who says she would “cry and cry and cry over just getting changed”. It got to the point where she no longer wanted to go out or do anything.
“[I’d] be like: ‘I can’t do this. I can’t go outside. I have nothing that I want to do’,” she told Dr. Phil.
Realising something had to change, Sophie sought out help from a counsellor. Through therapy – and with help from her husband-to-be Joe – she has learnt to love herself again.
“I [sometimes] don’t think I love myself at all, but I’m now with someone that makes me realise I do have some redeeming qualities, I suppose,” Sophie revealed.
“When someone tells you they love you every day, it makes you really think about why that is and I think that makes you love yourself a bit more. So yeah, I love myself.”
Well doesn’t that just give you all the warm and fuzzies.

She explains the picture off to her 10 million Instagram followers as how she fell asleep on set in between takes, in full costume. Hilariously adorable. But, some pensive fans had other theories about what this particular post could REALLY mean.
Some think this could actually be a secret reveal as to what’s to come for Sansa, users commented “Wake up Sansa!”, alongside “DOES THIS MEAN THAT SANSA IS GONNA DIE”, and the highly understandable: “Girl if this is a pic of you dead on set I’m blocking you! Don’t play with me.”
Another summed it up quite nicely, writing: “you definitely look dead here but okay.”
