There’s been a (very expected) rise in the use of video conferencing app like Zoom and Google Hangouts – social distancing literally left us with no choice but to love virtual meetings.
If you haven’t yet noticed, Zoom has created a beauty filter called ‘Touch Up My Appearance’, which gives the appearance of smooth skin. Now, I love me some filters, but I got to thinking recently about why the internet feels the need to constantly push us rose tinted glasses to both see the world and be seen through them.
Even though this feature is not “in your face” (it is hidden), I just question the thought process behind it – is it a marketing strategy or some deep seated belief that natural isn’t good enough and we all need a little help to “look better”?
I personally tried the beauty filter, you’ll definitely get that supermodel no-make-up-make-up look that everyone loves, but it’s easy to go through the motions and let every part of our online life become edited and framed to look a certain way – which should never be the case.
A lesson I hope Zoom can learn in this season is to focus on being one of the best video confrencing apps while we use learn to intentionally embrace our true state in all of its gore and glory.
