Cosmo ME: What causes fine hair?

Abby Haliti: Many things can cause fine hair. Some people naturally have this hair type due to genetics and others find their hair becomes finer due to stress, aging, or even medical conditions, like thyroid issues or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

C: What’s the difference between fine and thin hair?

A: Fine hair simply refers to the structure of the individual hair shaft. Thin hair refers to the amount of hair altogether. This has to do with your hair follicles and is different for everyone. In short, fine hair is about thickness, and thin hair is about density.

C: Is it possible to thicken this hair type?

A: Quality products can be used to temporarily improve hair thickness, but there’s no magic solution. Although it’s important to remember that one could have thick hair and still struggle with density, just like one could have lots of density, but finer hair. So having thick hair doesn’t always mean you will have dense hair.

C: What are the best hairstyles for fine hair?

A: For fine hair, I would recommend short-to-medium styles like a pixie cut, a shoulder cut, or a bob. Avoid any hairstyle that is “too much”, meaning don’t overdo it, especially with hair products. With fine hair, less is more, and I love a natural style that effortlessly enhances the hair. Everyone is different though so it’s always best to find a trusted professional who could give you customised advice.

C: How do you treat fine hair that’s also dry?

A: You could treat dry or fine hair naturally by taking vitamins, eating nutritious foods, minimising heat-styling (and hot showers), and using the right hair mask for your hair type and goals. There are many products out there that target dry or fine hair. All of this in addition to the right hairstyle and hair colour routine can make a difference and improve hair health.

I specialise in the highlighting technique known as French Balayage also because the low-maintenance upkeep helps clients do less to their hair, while still achieving the results they desire.

C: How can fine hair be volumised?

A: Styling products that work best for fine hair are hair mousse, thickening and texture sprays, volumising treatments, and volumising shampoo and conditioner. Remember, especially with fine hair, less is more. Oils can be used as a treatment, just be mindful when applying the product, it’s more helpful to start off with a small amount and add more as needed. A professional can also share blowout tips for clients with fine hair to help with volume.

C: Is it safe to colour fine hair?

A: Absolutely, yes, it’s safe to colour fine hair, and different techniques can be used for different hair goals. For this, I also recommend speaking to your trusted hair professional, because observing and analysing the hair is an important aspect of deciding which service will work best.

C: What are three tips for growing fine hair long?

A: Take beneficial vitamins, trim your hair often, and increase certain foods in your diet that help hair health. Also, seek a professional hairstylist that you trust so they can help you create a hair care routine, including hairstyle/hair colour, that works for you, your hair type, and your goals.

For example, if a client says she wants to keep hair colour maintenance at a minimum to improve hair health, I will create a look that would achieve this- instead of going to the salon every four to six weeks she’s coming in every few months.

C: What are three tips to keep fine hair from breaking?

A: Keep hair moisturised, lessen heat-styling (and again, don’t forget this includes hot showers), and be gentle when combing the hair.
