The beauty world has been through its fair share of contouring phases, from the renowned cheek contouring that was around for quite a while to contouring your body. (Was anyone else tempted to contour on some fake abs? No, just me?)

Well anyway, just when you thought the hype had died down – a new contour hack has entered the chat. Introducing: eye contouring.

Yup, you heard me! The latest beauty hack involves using your age-old contouring skills to change the shape of your eyes or accentuate your existing shape. Either way, whether you have hood eyes, monolids, almond-shaped or round eyes, there’s a contouring hack for you. Intriguing, right?

Well, I’m not one to gate-keep the good stuff so let’s get into it and I’ll tell y’all how it works.

Step one: Prime-time, baby!

Pull out those primers and get setting the scene for the actual play. Excuse me theatre analogies, but you know the drill. Always prime to create that smooth base for a long-lasting make-up look. Optional: use a nude-ish eyeshadow over your lids before you begin contouring. Sort of like when you paint a wall white before you start painting, it just makes sense to do it.

Step two: Pick your miracle-workers

It’s time to grab the shades you need to make the magic happen. Opt for a shade that’s a little darker than your original skin tone to create that contoured effect on your skin. Your exact contouring methods will differ based on your eye-shape and what you’re trying to do. For example, if you have round eyes and you’re trying to make them more narrow, you would apply a darker shade to the centre of your eyelid and a lighter one to highlight the corners.

The best thing to do is conduct a quick Google search (or watch a TikTok video or YouTube tutorial) depending on your goals to ensure you’re getting it right.

Step three: Blending is your cardio

Don’t forget this part! Don’t just pack on a bunch of different shades on your eyelid and forget to *actually* blend them in. You can either use a blending brush or a smudging tool just to blend the shades but don’t overblend it to the point where they’ve amalgamated into one and you can’t tell the difference. It sounds confusing, but you know what I mean.

Step four: Be a little extra!

Now this one is optional, but I say go big or go home. Pull out your winged liner, grab some shimmery shades and make those eyes ~pop~. Now that the contouring is done, it’s time to have all the fun!

So there you have it, a four-step quick and easy guide to hopping on the latest trend before everyone else does. Enjoy!
