On Wednesday afternoon in Washington D.C, the U.S. Congress were meeting to officially certify the votes for President-elect Joe Biden (basically they were counting the votes),when a a mob of pro-Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building ( the government building where members of Congress work). This pretty much put the counting of the Electoral College Votes to an abrupt stop.

Here is a simple breakdown of exactly what happened at the Capitol building:

The day started out with Congress meeting to certify the Electoral College Votes, but things took a completely different turn when a mob pro-Trump supporters stormed into the Capitol. They bashed through the doors and windows and forced themselves past the outnumbered police officers, and into the government building. As a result all the lawmakers, journalists and others in the Capitol were evacuated right before the armed standoff at the House chambers entrance. Unfortunately, the violence sadly led to the deaths of 4 individuals, one woman was shot, and the three other indivudals had medical emergencies.

At around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, Facebook and Instagram  banned President Trump from posting on social media for 24 hours. Twitter has also banned Trump from posting for 12 hours.

Some of the reporters from Politico who sought shelter in the Capitol, took to Twitter to update everyone on how they were doing and what exactly was happening during all this chaos. Here are some of their tweets:

Vice-President elect Kamala Harris also took to Instagram and Twitter to voice her opinion on these violent protests.

At around 8pm, almost an hour after hundreds of law enforcement officers finished clearing the mob, heavily armed FBI agents (in riot gear), helped escort the the senators and lawmakers back to their offices.

We can all agree that we have never seen a scene like this in modern American History.Â
