Many residents took to Twitter to confirm whether or not there was an earthquake in Dubai, or if it could have been something else. One user reported that it may have been the demolition of a nearby building, the Dubai Pearl:

Yesterday an earthquake measuring 2.1 on the Richter Scale was reported in the Oman Sea, not far from the UAE shore, recorded by the National Seismic Network at 4.09 pm.
The National Centre of Meteorology announced the news and ensured that no residents had felt the earthquake, and it had no effect on the country.

According to Arabian Business, ‘the demolition of the Dubai Pearl had begun in November, first-hand witnesses earlier told Arabian Business, with deconstruction equipment spotted at the site. The project, first announced in 2002, included a 73-story building but has been put on indefinite hold since 2009, due to a lack of investors in the residential skyscraper.’

“That earthshaking tremor in #Dubai Media City was the old Dubai Pearl buildings being demolished,” reported one Twitter user.
The National Centre of Meteorology and Dubai Media City’s officials haven’t released any statements yet on whether or not these tremors were an earthquake in the city.
