We told you Mercury Retrograde was coming and last night she proved her power (and wrath) to us with a social media outage experienced by everyone around the world. Unless you shut off your phone, computer, and iPad at 7:30 pm each night, you most likely were staring at the same photo at the top of your feed no matter how many times you tried to refresh.

(Disclaimer: if you were lucky enough to have @cosmomiddleeast at the top of your Instagram account, consider yourself blessed and keep on double-tapping all our posts. Tysm.)

Last night, there was a seven-hour global social media outage on Whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook. Seven hours. Facebook isn’t giving out the deets on exactly why we were kept in the (literal) dark. Instead, they’ve vaguely chalked it up to being an internal error. We’re not sure what that *exactly* means and suspect that someone over in Silicon Valley read our recent piece on SZA and were so engrossed they accidentally forgot to turn on their backup servers.

As the tech giant scrambled to get our favourite social media apps back up and running, while losing over $160 million dollars in the process (#oops), there was one true hero that stood out amongst the rest.

Enter Twitter.

The social media outage memes that started to pop up were nothing but pure fire. We *almost* forgot about the other social media apps and kept scrolling and lol-ing on repeat.

Luckily, this morning we woke up and all was right in the social media world. No longer were we forced to start at that same photo on the top of our Instagram feed.

Life is back to normal (for now) and the memes are still making us laugh as we’re sipping on our cappuccino and finding out what everyone did last night during the big crash.

Thanks so much, Twitter. You’re a real one.
