Starting June of this year, Abu Dhabi authorities have announced that they will begin implementing measures to ban single-use plastics as an effort to promote sustainability for the betterment of the environment.

The goal of this single-use plastic policy introduced in 2020 by The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) is to combat climate change and pollution emissions by gradually exchanging these contaminating plastics for reusable and more sustainable alternatives.

What else will Abu Dhabi be doing to ban single-use plastic?

For those who have no clue what these banned single-use plastic items are, these include plastic cups, cutlery, lids, and stirrers. By 2024, the EAD also plans to completely get rid of single-use styrofoam cups, containers, and plates. They have already taken steps in this effort by partnering with factories and other facilities that make and consume these toxic single-use plastics.

“As part of our plan to completely curb the use of single-use plastics, we are encouraging Abu Dhabi citizens to use more multipurpose and re-usable materials to reduce their environmental footprint,” said Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD.

To create further awareness of these environmentally friendly implementations and educate the public, a massive campaign will be launched all over the Emirates with events that include volunteer-based cleaning of streets and parks and influential environmentalist guest speaker events, just to name a few.

But for right now, even if you do not reside in Abu Dhabi, begin implementing the reduction of single-use plastics in your daily life because the more people that do it, the faster we will be able to get our environment back on track.
