Uhm, yeah. We have a new term incoming, and it’s one you’ve definitely been doing for quite some time now.

While there seems to be no end with so-called innovative phrases, and coining new terms, this one, actually makes so much sense.

The platform we all know and love, Instagram, just released a campaign that rings quite close to every Gen Z’s habit of DM’ing. This time around, they decided to celebrate everything about connection — and no, it’s the usual meet and greet, and buh-bye.

Because Instagram found a growing uptrend in sharing memes (something we do vehemently like it’s a job) and all the fluffy content with friends and family, especially to those you meet randomly on the internet, they came up with Trendships. The perfect word that describes everything that we have been doing up to this point.

Combining the two words “trends” and “friendships,” Trenships is quite literally how Gen Z’s and Millennials have been expressing their affection towards their close friends — by sharing hearty content to spark convos.

Just like how you have 30 people in your close friends, and the only way to stay close to them is sending an adorable orange cat reel saying: “Hey, we haven’t talked in a while, but this reminded me of you 🥺

Despite it being an odd form of forging relationships (Boomers pls…), this phenomenon has been occurring for ages without a definite term. But thanks to Instagram, the term Trendships will officially be living in everyone’s heads rent-free.

“Trendships is not just about sharing popular or viral content; it is about creating community over shared experiences and interests,” said Nada Enan the Head of Communications, Middle East & North Africa, Meta.

Enan further commented that because of our habit of sending across relatable content and tons of memes, people, in general, are actually nurturing more intimate connections. “It underscores how social platforms are increasingly pivotal to building community in our daily lives and evolving how we communicate in the digital era,” she stated.

Now that we’re on the way to embracing the new term, Instagram is doing a little something with dozens of content creators across the Middle East, Turkey, and further afield with African regions.

Your favourite rising content creators such as Amina Hussein, Anans El Hajj and Azam Alawaidhi are joining the #whatsyourtrendship to share their stories and their take on Trenships.
