Season 2 of the Gossip Girl revival just premiered in December, but if you’re already waiting impatiently to find out how senior year goes for your favorite group of dramatic teens… well, you’re going to have to keep waiting. Season 3 of Gossip Girl is pretty much a mystery as of now.
The second season of Gossip Girl brought viewers into the second semester of junior year for our fave Constance Billard-St. Jude’s students. And their lives, with this being Gossip Girl, don’t involve a lot of homework. Instead, there’s a battle for the coveted queen bee position, an affair with a married man, and attendance at the Met Gala. You know, just your casual attending school by day, going to fashion’s biggest event by night situation. Who can’t relate?
But as for what comes next? That’s one secret I’ll never tell.

Is Gossip Girl getting a season 3?
A third season of the show has not been announced by HBO Max. But that said we know that the showrunner for the series is planning on one anyway. In an interview with PopSugar, Joshua Safran said the finale of season 2 is essentially a season 3 premiere.
“Well, I will say that in the tradition of Gossip Girl in the past, season 2 resolves its storylines at a certain point in the finale, and then when you think it’s over… basically, the season premiere of season 3 happens at the end of season 2,” Safran explained. “It’s not just five minutes, it’s like a 25-minute season premiere. A lot of stuff happens, more than I think has ever happened in any Gossip Girl episode, to the point where once you watch the finale you’ll be like, ‘Oh, I see. There’s season 3 right there.'” Intriguing!
What will happen in Gossip Girl season 3?
If a third season happens, the only concrete-ish thing we know is it’ll likely take place during the first semester of senior year.
“I definitely would love to keep the show going,” Safran told Harper’s Bazaar around the time season 1 debuted. “I engineered it so that every season is a semester, so that we didn’t get into the problem the first show got into, which was by season 3, they had to go to college. Which, at the time, I think was the right decision. When you look back, then, of course, you could have stayed at high school longer. If every season is a semester and they’re going to be juniors now, they would go to college in season 5.”
When will Gossip Girl return for season 3?
If Gossip Girl returns, it would likely premiere in late 2023. The first season was split in two halves, with the first premiering in July 2021 and the second in November 2021. Then the second season premiered in December 2022. If the show follows a similar schedule, a late 2023 premiere seems most likely.
As for when Gossip Girl could be officially renewed, the second season was announced two months after the show premiered in September 2021. So a renewal announcement could be on its way in February 2023, if HBO Max follows a similar schedule.
Long story short: If the series gets renewed, expect to wait about a year for more gossip. Until then, there are six full seasons of the original to keep you occupied. Blair and Serena can still keep you company!
