Fancy an interiors update? As we get into 2022 (eek), the trends for the year are already starting to reveal themselves, and we have excellent news: there’s literally something for everyone.
Matt Siberry, Head of Home at Pinterest, has rounded up the biggest interiors trends for 2022, and whether you’re into colour explosions or sleek and modern, looking to update your entire home or want to add some simple tweaks, we guarantee there’s something to take your fancy.
Emotional escape rooms
Sure, this one sounds baffling but really, the term ’emotional escape room’ can encompass all meanings of things, whether it’s creating a safe reading nook in your bedroom or a no-phone space for when you need a little escape.
“With life changes and continuous external pressures, people will seek out spaces for all their feels in 2022,” Matt explains. “Whether it’s a music-themed room, crystal room, or even a room dedicated to letting outrage.”
Biophilic design
Meaning design with a connection to nature, the biophilic design will continue to be big this year if the massive increase in searches on Pinterest is anything to go by. Plus, according to Matt, we’ll actually be even more green-fingered in 2022.
“Many of us have become more than a little plant obsessed over the last year, with house plants helping to make up the perfect video call background. Well in 2022, thanks to the way in which plants increase our connection to nature and are proven to enhance our well being, plant-lovers will be taking things a step further at home, by designing their rooms with a plant-first mindset. Expect to see staircase gardens, floral ceilings and biophilic offices galore.”
Limitless luxe
The last two years have been quite *a lot*, and as a result, Pinterest predicts we’ll be looking for a little something to lift our spirits, and that’s where the fancy (or at least seemingly fancy) room refresh comes in.
Matt says, “After many of us have spent a lot of time staring at the same four walls over the past year, it’s not surprising that we want to incorporate a little extra luxury into our lives. But what is a little more unexpected, is that people will look to bring luxe into even their laundry rooms. Rather than letting a space become forgotten, the nooks and crannies in people’s homes will become great conversation starters for when guests are over.”
Barkitecture
“We all know someone, or were that someone, who became a pet parent during the pandemic,” Matt explains. “Pampering our pooches and feline friends has become a part of our daily routines, but it seems a belly rub or back scratch simply isn’t enough to keep our demanding doggos satisfied anymore.
In 2022, we anticipate that people will redesign their homes with their furry friends at the forefront, from luxury dog rooms to ‘catified’ homes.”
Curve appeal
From bubble candles to scalloped armchairs, interior trends have been all about those round, curved shapes recently and according to Matt, that isn’t stopping anytime soon.
“While our homes have already become more well-rounded in their sense of purpose, our interior styles will become more rounded too in 2022; from curved couches, to bar designs and kitchen islands.”
Hellenistic Revival
Nostalgia is big right now (when is it not?) and as Matt explains, this will also extend to our interiors and home inspo too, with searches for ‘ancient Greece aesthetic’ reportedly up 65% on Pinterest this year.
“Taking inspiration from the Ancient Greeks to add a touch of elegance to their interiors, people will invest in everything from Corinthian home decor to Aphrodite-inspired wallpaper.”
