Talk about an unexpected surprise: A woman who went to the hospital thinking her severe pain was a kidney stone ended up delivering a baby! I know, I know — how can a woman not know she was pregnant for that long?! She swears she didn’t. (And more on that later.)

Stephanie Jaegers’s husband, Michael, wrote a post on Facebook giving a run-down of what happened, as reported by the Huffington Post. After arriving at the hospital and getting checked out by a doctor, Jaegers learned she 38 weeks pregnant and that she was expected to give birth. At 3:50 a.m. last Wednesday, she delivered a baby boy, Shaun Jude Jaegers.

You can imagine the skepticism friends, family, and random strangers might have exhibited upon hearing the story. Fortunately, Michael cleared somethings up in a later post, shedding some light on why the couple might not have known about her pregnancy.

“Steph was diagnosed with pre-menopause awhile back, which would justify the hormone imbalance also associated with a pregnancy,” he wrote. “Shaun [the newborn baby] was also breech throughout the entire pregnancy which prevented him from moving around to indicate to Steph that he was in there and his position made it to where Steph didn’t ‘show.’ The most bizarre part is she continued to have a menstrual cycle, which the hospital tells us is rare, but can happen. Lastly, Steph broke her ankle a couple of weeks ago and was laid up for the last couple of weeks limiting her movements. All of this together ruled out in our minds even the remote possibility of a pregnancy. Hope this helps explain a bit about how/why this birth came as such a shock to us. I can’t even begin to explain to you guys the range of emotions we’ve experienced over the last 12 hours. I went from googling ’kidney stone treatments’ to a panic attack over the fact that not only were we pregnant, but the baby was coming within the hour. “

“Most parents have a good 9+ months to plan for such a blessing,” he added. “We had 30 minutes notice.”

The good news is that this couple already has three healthy children, so they weren’t catapulted into the parenting world without any experience. And bonus? They had saved some of their other children’s clothes, so they didn’t have to do an emergency haul.

As Michael wrote, “And while it was very unexpected, we’ve been blessed for a 4th time with an angel.”
