A lot can go wrong on Valentine’s Day. Your dress refuses to stay steamed. Your makeup starts pilling on top of your skincare. You realise, far too late, that you’ve run out of your favourite perfume. And just as you’re about to leave for your dinner reservation, 40 minutes away? Your taxi cancels. So romantic.

Which is why, in a city where traffic and unpredictability go hand in hand, a reliable ride is basically half the date. Enter Hala, Dubai’s go-to e-hailing taxi solution, which has just dropped some interesting insights into how residents actually moved around the city on Valentine’s Day last year—and no, it wasn’t all fancy candlelit dinners in Downtown.

Based on anonymised data from Friday, 14 February 2025, overall taxi demand was around 10 per cent higher than a typical February weekday, as couples squeezed in dinner dates and late-night plans alongside their usual workday travel. Because in Dubai, the hustle never really clocks out.

Longer nights, local dates

And despite Dubai Bling culture, and Nour’s now-iconic “ana I don’t do coffee dates, I don’t do walking dates”, it turns out long evenings and local plans are very much still a thing. Hala’s data points to longer nights and a growing preference for neighbourhood-led celebrations, rather than everyone flocking to the same picture-perfect romantic hotspots.

Classic Valentine’s Day dinner spots are still *that* girl

That said, the classics haven’t lost their shine. Candlelit dinners still reign supreme. JBR recorded the strongest uplift in evening taxi demand, with trips jumping by around 25 per cent compared to a regular Friday night. Festival City followed closely with a 20 per cent rise, while Palm Jumeirah and Downtown Dubai each saw increases of around 14 per cent. Waterfront views and skyline dinners, it seems, will never really go out of style.

According to Hala ride trends, the most popular Valentine’s Day hotspots across Dubai included JBR & The Walk, where beachfront favourites like Bla Bla, Trader Vic’s and La Mezcaleria kept the late-night crowd moving. Downtown Dubai remained a romantic staple, with couples heading to Burj Khalifa-adjacent icons like CÉ LA VI, At.mosphere, Address Sky View and Souk Al Bahar.

Over on Palm Jumeirah, luxury dining and sunset views dominated, with Atlantis The Royal, Aura Sky Pool, Palm West Beach, FIVE Palm and Rixos The Palm all pulling strong demand.

Dubai Marina stayed steady as ever, thanks to Pier 7, Marina Harbour, and its line-up of rooftop lounges, while Festival City drew couples in with waterfront dining and its famous fountain show. Business Bay proved it’s not just about office hours, with upscale dining spots like Prime68 and Asia Asia, and live show venue La Perle, keeping taxis busy. Meanwhile, Deira Creek and Old Dubai continued to charm with dhow dinner cruises and nostalgic creekside dining, perfect for dates where you just want to disappear into your own little world.

Karama and Oud Metha are having their Valentine’s moment

But honestly? We kind of already knew all that.

What’s more interesting is the quieter shift happening closer to home. Neighbourhoods like Karama and Oud Metha, along with select zones within Dubai Marina, saw evening taxi demand rise by 10 to 15 per cent compared to a normal Friday. Translation: more couples are choosing familiar spots, cosy community hubs and low-key favourites over travelling across the city for one big destination.

Time is key

Timing also played a major role. Taxi demand began building from 8 pm, but peaked later than usual, with the busiest window falling between 10 pm and 1 am. Bookings after 10 pm were around 30 per cent higher than on a normal Friday, proving what we already knew: the best Valentine’s Day plans involve a second dessert date—and more than one “one last stop”.

Late nights and lost phones

Love may be blind, but it’s apparently also forgetful. Hala saw a spike in lost items, with 47 per cent of forgotten belongings being electronics, including phones. A very on-brand Valentine’s Day plot twist.

For anyone planning Valentine’s Day this year, last year’s data sends a pretty clear message: romance in Dubai isn’t limited to Downtown pincode or waterfront destinations. Some of the biggest Valentine’s Day spikes are happening closer to home, and much later into the night.

And honestly? That sounds like a pretty perfect date to us. 💌
