The Met Gala, which always takes place on the first Monday in May, was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the rescheduled date is almost here! It’s all going down on Monday, September 13, so mark your calendars, set your reminders, and prepare yourself for some incredible capital “F” Fashion. Keep reading below for everything you need to know before it happens from the theme to the co-chairs (did someone say Timothée Chalamet?!) to the confirmed—and speculated—guests.
When is it taking place?
The date was pushed back to September 13 as opposed to May 3, when it would have originally taken place this year due to the pandemic and because the first Monday in September was Labor Day and a federal holiday. A spokesperson for the museum told E! that every guest will be required to be fully vaccinated and wear a mask indoors during the event as precautions.
What is the theme?
The theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and the exhibit is set to open on September 18, 2021. There will also be a second part, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” that follows on May 5, 2022. Designers included in the exhibit are Christopher John Rogers, Prabal Gurung, Conner Ives, Andre Walker, and more.
It will also resemble a home in the museum, with each “room” representing a different word with our relationship to fashion. Some examples: the office is “aspiration,” the kitchen is “well-being,” and the attic is “nostalgia.”
Who are the co-chairs and hosts?
Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet, and Naomi Osaka are all co-chairing the event together, as each person is known for their unique and bold fashion moments. Honorary chairs include Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and, of course, Anna Wintour.

How can I watch?
The Met Gala livestream will begin at 5:30 p.m. EST on Sept. 13 on Vogue’s Twitter account here. Keke Palmer and Ilana Glazer will be hosting the stream, interviewing the A-listers as they make their way down the red carpet. Also, based on the past few years, the event normally airs on E!, which also features pre-show coverage.
Who is attending?
Rihanna posted on her IG Story that she is hosting *the* Met Gala after party (and that no one else should even try to compete lol), so it’s safe to assume that she’d also attend the main event. Other notable figures we can guess are the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Lady Gaga. But based on some reports, the guest list will skew younger this year with the additions of Gen-Z stars like Olivia Rodrigo, Addison Rae, and Emma Chamberlain.
Harry Styles, Zendaya, Andy Cohen, and Sarah Jessica Parker opted out of the event this year.
