The fashion world’s movers and shakers will be celebrating the country’s very first fashion week from March 26 to March 31 at the super cool Dame Zaha Hadid-designed Apex Centre. The event marks an important move toward Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Kingdom Vision 2030 – making Saudi Arabia a modern, tourist-friendly post-oil economy.

HH Princess Noura Bint Faisal Al Saud, the Arab Fashion Council’s honorary president, announced the groundbreaking event in London on February 19. “We are proud of the significant progress achieved by the Arab Fashion Council in Riyadh, as we announce today the first Fashion Week in the history of the Kingdom,” she stated on the council’s official website.

Italian designer Roberto Cavalli will headline the event, alongside other prominent and emerging international and regional designers. There’s no word yet about whether only modest designs will be showcased.

Hot on the heels of exciting new changes specifically designed to empower women (allowing Saudi women to drive and the increase of women in the workforce), the kingdom is making great strides toward modernisation. And the momentum toward change doesn’t show any signs of slowing down with an AFW already scheduled in October.

A new era is in the making and we’re loving every bit of it.
