The 39-year-old handsome and super smart Macron was elected President of France yesterday in a landslide victory. But the question on everyone’s mind is – who is he? We’ve got the lowdown:
1. Emmanuel was born in Amniens and both his parents are stars in their careers. His mom, Françoise is a physician, and his dad, Jean-Michel Macron is a professor of neurology at the University of Picardy.
2. Emmanuel and his wife, Brigitte Trogneux’s love story is the thing of romance novels with disapproving parents and making it work despite all odds. She’s 24 years older than him and comes from a wealthy family of chocolatiers. His parents tried to separate them and send him to school in Paris because they disapproved of his relationship which caused a huge scandal in their small community. She left her husband and moved to Paris to be with Emmanuel with her three children, a few years later. They married in 2007.

3. Emmanuel was always ambitious. He attended the École Nationale d’Administration that is famous for training the elite, including French ministers, central bankers and presidents. Macron graduated at the top of his class and then became an investment banker with Rothschild. When asked by an alumnus of the École Nationale where he sees himself in 30 years, he allegedly responded, “President of the Republic”.
4. Francois Hollande, the leader of the Socialist party, noticed Macron after he closed a US$11.8 billion (roughly Dhs43.3 billion) deal with Nestlé. He hired him as Deputy Chief of Staff when he became President in 2012 and Minister of Economy and Finance in 2014.
5. He’s an amazing pianist — good enough to be a professional!
6. Macron calls Brigitte his “intellectual soulmate and confidante” and has only ever had one other relationship before her.Â
7. He’s going to make the first lady’s position, which isn’t an official status in France, to be defined. While Brigitte will have a budget and staff, she won’t have a salary. She’s passionate about education, especially with regards to autistic and underprivileged children.Â
8. He has promised that he will make half his government’s candidates women in next month’s elections.
9. He has three step children (Brigitte’s daughter Tiphaine and sons Sébastien and Laurence) and seven grandchildren who call him ‘Daddy’.
10. He calls himself a feminist also and is passionate about equal pay and maternity leave.
